About Sara Rouhi

I am a thoughtful, collaborative senior leader (woman of color and first-generation immigrant) who leverages partnerships to drive business transformation and growth. I use relationships to build brand/mission awareness, generate commercial opportunities, test drive strategies, and attract talent. I am a seasoned public speaker (groups of 400+ globally), nuanced written and oral communicator, and soft-skills expert adept at generating and maintaining institutionally valuable relationships. Beyond just growing business opportunities, I’m also a committed coach, recruiter, and retainer of diverse talent. I am effective at “selling” a business to those who can make it succeed.Having successfully built out PLOS institutional business from scratch (and handed it over to a fully operational sales team), I am shifting my business development efforts to PLOS' open science efforts in the Americas. I will be broadening my remit from libraries to open science policy, funding, and regional cooperation across the Americas. While I will continue to support my sales colleagues, my focus will shift to publishing/open science strategic partnerships in the region. As the Director of Strategic Partnerships at PLOS, Sara focused on developing new business models for sustainable, inclusive open access publishing. Since she’s joined PLOS, the organization has launched three non-APC based business models, one of which — Community Action Publishing — was awarded the ALPSP award for Innovation in Publishing. As a member of PLOS’ leadership team, she worked to ensure PLOS’ commercial work aligns closely with its mission to foster open science globally.Sara is active in the scholarly communications community as a volunteer and thought leader speaking frequently on open access, equity in publishing, and diversity in scholarly communications. She is currently Board Member for the a Society of Scholarly Publishing (SSP) and was the recipient of SSP’s Emerging Leader award in 2015.

    In this new role at PLOS I will be broadening my remit from libraries to open science policy, funding, and regional cooperation across the Americas.     Sara Rouhi manages business development for Altmetric's non-academic business in the US and Canada. Sara launched Altmetric's institutional presence in 2014 signing its first academic customer, the University of Cambridge in the UK, and is currently responsible for expanding Altmetric's product and services offerings into the corporate, government agency, and funder spaces bringing on such organizations as the  Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, the National Academies of Science, the World Bank, and many others.In addition to her business development role, she has expanded Altmetric's institutional offerings to include bespoke consultancy, data, and analytics services.
