I distinctly remember my first science lesson in school, learning about the structure and function of cells. It was as if a once-hidden world was now open to me which sparked a lifelong passion for life sciences. This passion led me to Auckland University of Technology, where I study Medical Laboratory Sciences, specializing in immunology and molecular diagnostics. When the covid pandemic hit New Zealand in 2020, my studies were delayed. Not content with waiting for it to pass, I reached out and began working at Lab Plus as a Trainee Scientist, testing for covid. This is where I uncovered my passion for genetic diagnostics, which lead me to pursue a placement at Grafton Clinical Genomics. Here my lab skills have been greatly improved having opportunities to work with MassArray genotyping, Illumina library preps for the TSO500 and gene expression panels for breast cancer with the Prosigna assay. When I am not donning a lab coat and gloves, I am proudly supporting the Blues rugby team at Eden Park, or have my attention glued to a puzzle book.
