I am a recent Banana Slug graduate. I obtained a Bachelor of Science in Cognitive Science from UC Santa Cruz after receiving an Associate in Arts in General Studies, Language and Rationality from my junior college. Despite my career just at the brink of starting, I have contributed many things to the community that I am proud of, as demonstrated by my work, research, and volunteer experience.I was an academic tutor for over a year to students in low-income schools, providing them with educational mentoring as well as being a social support in the hopes that they would continue onto higher education and set a path towards achieving their optimal potential. As an undergraduate, I was a research assistant in two cognitive psychology labs, supervising and documenting participants as they underwent studies on memory and attention. This experience strengthened not only my research, presentation, and documentation skills, but taught me the importance of collaborative learning. While I was in high school, I became vice president and then president of the Environmental Club. Because the school was new, I was able to help implement the foundation of the club and was one of the founding members of the school's Recycling Club, where we went around the school weekly to help dispose of recyclable materials. Beyond high school, I was a student volunteer for the Multipurpose Senior Services Program under the Department of Aging, where I conducted home visits and assessments on elderly clients in order to support their living independently. In this period, I was exposed to and interacted with individuals whom had neurological and other brain disorders that I had studied about in college, as well as gaining experience working with case manager social workers and documenting client cases in an electronic system.I want to further gain experience and work with the student population to improve their lives through education, advocacy, and providing supporting resources.
