I am the Founder & Chief Executive of Raah Foundation, a for-purpose organization that works on Planet for People in one of the biodiverse hotspots in the world – the northern western ghats. This region is very important as it regulates India’s climatic patterns, and ten important rivers including the mighty Godavari and Krishna have catchments here on whom over 235 million people depend in different ways for livelihoods and food security. We have already lost 30% of the forest cover and critical biodiversity – species, flora, fauna is endangered with climate change exacerbated, people are at an extreme risk of being pushed further into the vicious cycle of poverty and deprivation, and hunger.We believe that Biodiversity and Livelihoods and Planet and People can thrive together and not at the cost of each other. Our work focuses on two broad pillars – 1. Revive and regenerate what is damaged 2. Prevent further loss of biodiversity and facilitate the creation of a bioeconomy or nature-based economy where people prosper in harmony with the environment. We take an integrated landscape management approach that includes activities like creating water-positive villages, soil and moisture conservation, contour lining of farms, protecting grasses, designating fragile and critical areas, diverting grazing, converting barren land into biodiverse enriched carbon sinks through the plantation of native trees, etc., removal of invasive species, encouraging agroforestry, regenerative agriculture, water use efficiency for water-guzzling crops, etc. Our approach is bottom-up by involving women and indigenous people we build stewardship. We bring all stakeholders together and create a shared vision that creates healthy ecosystems essential for life. My background as a successful serial entrepreneur - starting, building robust enterprises, and successfully scaling has helped us design and implement impactful programs with an outcome-focused approach. We are building a research repository and strong evidence base to support policy and advocacy.
