I was responsible for the hydroacoustics work undertaken at Wageningen Marine Research. Part of my work involved conducting annual statutory acoustic surveys for stocks of blue whiting, North Sea herring and Atlanto-Scandian herring. In addition, I was participating in a range of projects involving acoustics, such as: behaviour studies of fish using the DIDSON (a high-frequency imaging sonar, or "acoustic camera"), multifrequency and broadband species identification, target strength modelling, acoustic data collection from platform of opportunities (i.e. fishing vessels), and (geo)statistical data analyses.

My PhD focused on: Use of backscattering models for fish to determine the acoustic target strength of herring (Clupea harengus) Measurements of fish shape (incl X-ray and MRI), physiology, physical properties and behaviour to build basis for model parameters Construction of a Bayesian framework of error propagation to allow for estimates of uncertainty in the models and subsequent biomass estimates Comparison of model outputs to in situ observations of herring target strength made at sea

Individual research project to help developing empirical models to determine annual larval mortalities for herring in the North Sea.

As a research assistant at FRS I was involved in research into remote species identification using multiple acoustic frequencies (as part of the EU project 'SIMFAMI').
