Profile bio

About Sasha Burwell

As a Postdoctoral Associate in the Tadross lab at Duke University, I apply novel pharmacology tools and combinatorial approaches to study dopamine degeneration in Parkinson's Disease. I use DART (Drug Acutely Restricted by Tethering) to manipulate the strength of specific receptor-mediated endogenous inputs to midbrain dopamine neurons and investigate how this affects neuronal firing activity and large-scale animal behavior. I obtained my PhD in Neurobiology from Duke University in June 2023, after completing a dissertation on the role of GABAergic innervation of dopamine neurons in reward circuits. I graduated from McGill University in 2017 with a B.Sc. in Neuroscience and a minor in Computer Science. During my time in Montreal, I conducted and published a thorough literature review of the ethics of brain computer interface medical devices.Throughout my academic research career I have developed strong skills in critical thinking, independent and team-based working, problem solving, project management, and data analysis and interpretation. I have performed extensive literature reviews to extract pertinent information and discover gaps in scientific understanding, and have a robust track-record in preparing publication-level scientific documents. I am passionate about the advancement of neurobiology therapeutics, and am eager to transition to a role that provides a broader perspective of and influence over research development and regulation. I value collaboration, diversity, and innovation in my work, and I am always eager to learn new skills and methods.
