I am an airline pilot, flight instructor, ice hockey official, and infrastructure architect. I am also a science-fiction author, a musician, a book designer, and a micro-publisher.I love doing stuff, designing stuff, and building stuff. Before moving into aviation full-time, I spent about twenty years in the tech industry. Most of my work was as an infrastructure architect, systems engineer and systems administrator, both full-time and as a consultant. I've built out many datacenters, and designed and built ISPs and compute clouds; I specialize in the design of internet-facing production infrastructure, and in writing the software components to automate it all. I build to abstract away the inevitable change of technologies. My goal has always been to provide renewable platforms which, at a minimum standard, scale horizontally and age gracefully. My specialties in tech are large-scale systems architecture and horizontally-scalable designs using Linux, Solaris, FreeBSD, AIX, etc. Over the years, most of my work has become platform agnostic, built on simple, modular, data-driven systems that don't require large investments in platform software, minimize uniqueness, and require extremely minimal intervention.
