I was responsible for the design and implementation of a wireless monitoring system, for use in the fuel industry to monitor remote equipment. As the principal engineer, I was involved in every aspect of the project, including:• Overall system design and producing product specification documents.• Making key design decisions such as microcontroller choice, which tasks to perform in hardware or software, selection of programming language and compiler to use etc.• Hardware design, using 8051 based FLASH micro, DUART, I2C, Switch Mode PSU, Analog and Digital interfacing techniques, RS232 and RS485, Opto-isolation techniques, Mixed voltage circuits (3.3/5.0V), CMOS logic and Wireless CDMA broadband modem interface.• Printed Circuit Board design using Protel 98 and Altium DXP software packages. Two sided through-hole and surface mount PCB design. Grounding techniques and EMC considerations.• Hardware prototyping and testing• Firmware design and coding in C and Assembly language. Use of source control and debugging tools. Serial communication protocols RS232 and I2C, development of robust protocols for alarm transmission over CDMA network (TCP/IP based). • Development of Visual Basic base station software and PHP driven web-based remote access applications. Intergration with existing Access Databases.• Installation of trail units and training of technical and field staff.• Preparing product for commercial release, liasing with PCB manufacturer, sourcing components, product documentation.

• Repair of microprocessor based electronic equipment, at the component level.• Telemetry system configuration, implementation, commissioning, servicing and support. This included on site setup, testing and commissioning, and remote support via dial-up modem. It also included troubleshooting of radio communication links between base stations and RTU equipment.• Design of graphical user interfaces for pump station monitoring and control, using InTouch and Fix process visualisation software• Testing MC68HC16 and Atmel Mega103 based hardware and firmware• Development of some firmware for Atmel Mega103 based products, using C programming language
