About Sasha Russell-Ciardi

My work is rooted in a commitment to dismantling systems of oppression by nurturing alternatives rooted in decolonial, queer, feminist love. The approach I am most drawn to is post activism. Some writers, poets, and thinkers who have shaped my political understanding include Bayo Akomolafe, adrienne maree brown, Joy Harjo, Prentis Hemphill, Mary Oliver, Sohrab Sepehri, and Sophie Strand. For over two decades, from 1998- 2020, I worked for grassroots system change organizations and progressive cultural institutions in NYC. This included serving for seven years as the Executive Director of Tenants & Neighbors, a grassroots tenants' rights organization working to preserve at-risk affordable housing and to prevent the displacement associated with gentrification.Since 2020, I have worked in philanthropy, including at Solidago Foundation, Grassroots International, and now at Justice Funders. I accompany individuals and institutions in a process of radically redistributing extracted resources, in transformative and reparative ways, to social movements, and to work alongside those movements to usher in a post-capitalist, feminist, regenerative future. My MA, from NYU, was in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, focusing on human rights education and processes of democratic transition and consolidation. My BA, from Oberlin, was in Spanish and Labor and Trade Union Studies. While at Oberlin, I participated in a program of advanced social sciences at the University of Buenos Aires at FLACSO Argentina. I have translated As If No One Died, a novel by Poli Delano about the years before and after the military coup in Chile, and I write poetry and short stories. I am also interested in movement-based healing practices; I practice and teach ashtanga yoga and study contact improv. I am a solo parent of a young child, who I am raising in radical and spiritual community; she is my most important teacher. I previously went by the name Maggie Russell-Ciardi.
