Whether with LEGO Mindstorms, a midrange PIC, or a computer and an industrial CNC machine, adding smarts to hardware has always been part of my passion projects. My Ph.D. work centered on developing new tools and procedures for manufacturing and testing gecko-inspired adhesives, and developing and launching an autonomous gripper to the International Space Station. Now I'm at Orbit Fab working to build the in-space supply chain.

Principal EngineerOrbit Fab Aug 2020 - PresentBoulder, Colorado, UsLed the design, analysis, assembly, and testing of the GRIP prototype, Orbit Fab's active docking and refueling interface. Fabricated valve prototypes in-house, and performed data analysis and modeling to determine the cause of unexpected test results; the cause was validated with new tests and a design change was made. Completed design, analysis, assembly, and testing of Tenzing, Orbit Fab's demo fuel depot launched in 2021. Helped build the ME team, including developing and conducting technical interviews, and establishing engineering processes and systems. -
Payload DeveloperStanford University Jul 2018 - Aug 2020Stanford, Ca, UsLed Gecko-Inspired Adhesive Grasping project through design, test, certification against NASA requirements, and launch to the ISS. Designed hardware to meet manufacturability, packaging, and certification requirements. Designed PCBs and wrote firmware for RS-485 communication to host platform and I2C interface to sensors and actuators. Wrote design documentation and presented milestones at ISS payload safety reviews. Developed operational concept in cooperation with the ISS crew operations and Astrobee facility teams. -
LecturerStanford University Mar 2020 - Jun 2020Stanford, Ca, UsTaught ME218c, the third in a year-long graduate mechatronics sequence. Developed lab assignments, lab kits, and lecture content to quickly and successfully transition the course to be delivered remotely as part of the University's pandemic response. -
Research AssistantStanford University Sep 2013 - Apr 2020Stanford, Ca, UsWorked at Biomimetics and Dexterous Manipulation Laboratory on novel manufacturing and testing methods for gecko-inspired dry adhesives. Applied newly developed gecko-inspired adhesives to robotic systems. Responsible for the support and maintenance of the lab's manufacturing tools including a CNC machine, IR and UV laser cutters, and 3D printers. -
Graduate Teaching AffiliateStanford University Jan 2020 - Mar 2020Stanford, Ca, UsAssisted teaching ME210 Introduction to Mechatronics. Delivered lectures, graded assisgnments, and held office hours to support students through a project-based course. -
Course AssistantStanford University Jan 2015 - Jun 2016Stanford, Ca, UsWork for the Smart Product Design Laboratory. Fall 2015 through Spring 2016, course assistant for the ME218ABC Smart Product Design course sequence. Responsibilities include grading, holding office hours in the mechatronics lab, and maintenance of lab infrastructure including microcontrollers, component stock, and lab workstations.Winter and Spring 2015, I was responsible for hardware exploration and selection, as well as preliminary coursework development for a new mechatronics course to be taught at Stanford. Work included evaluating Bluetooth-enabled microcontrollers for features and ease of teaching, and developing preliminary firmware. -
Visiting ResearcherNasa Ames Research Center Jun 2018 - Aug 2018Moffett Field, California, UsDeveloped hardware and interface design for the Gecko Perching Gripper project to deploy a gecko-inspired adhesive gripper on the Astrobee robot on the international space station. -
Visiting ResearcherNasa Jet Propulsion Laboratory Jun 2017 - Aug 2017Pasadena, Ca, UsAdapted and implemented a manufacturing process for controllable gecko adhesives at JPL, and investigated the effect of fibril shape on rough surfaces. Developed design principles for the incorporation of gecko-inspired adhesives into soft robotic actuators and evaluated their utility with a fabricated actuator. -
Summer InternPrinceton University Jun 2012 - Aug 2012Designed and fabricated optical sensor system for a magnetic suspension balance system. The sensor system uses lasers to measure the position of a wind tunnel model to provide sensor input for feedback control. Analyzed dynamics/control of the suspended model in six degrees of freedom.
