Environmental Scientist with ten years of experience in different ecological projects overseas and in New Zealand. While studying at NorthTec I developed expertise in biosecurity, literature reviews, pest trapping, survey protocols, species knowledge & recognition, biodiversity monitoring, tree planting, data manipulation (collection, entry and analysis) weed removal and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). I’ve been snorkelling since I was seven, this was when my love for nature had developed. Observing the deterioration and bleaching of the coral made me concerned for Mother Earth. By the time I finished high school, I knew I would devote my life to conservation and science. The first step was to volunteer with organisations present in Hong Kong such as WWF (Shark Conservation Intern) and Living Seas (Reef Check, beach & underwater Cleanups). I then progressed to Karang Lestari (sustainability & artificial reefs) in Pemuteran, Bali, Indonesia and finally Reef Doctor (fisheries, species ID exams and ecosystem health monitoring) in Ifaty, Madagascar before making my way to study biodiversity management in Aotearoa New Zealand. I simultaneously worked my way from PADI Open Water in 2010 to PADI Rescue Diver in 2017.I have been volunteering with organisations such as Northland Regional Council, Department of Conservation, Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust, Parihaka Landcare Trust and Friends of Matakohe Limestone Island for the past 4 years. Completing the Marine Kaitiaki course was a big highlight as I obtained certifications such as Boatmasters(Coastguard), Marine mammal medic (Project Jonah), Marine disentanglement level 1 training (DOC) and PADI basic freediver (Dive Zone Bay of Islands). This course greatly improved my GIS and presentation skills as well as taught me more about topics I already had an interest in such as marine biology, sustainability, ecotourism, matauranga maori (especially weaving and Rongoa) and general boat maintenance.
