Also examining the process of conducting this research: "From complaints to evidence-based solutions: Bedside nurses investigate end-of-life care issues in critical care."At the Cultural Wellness Center (CWC) I am reaching out to young professionals and students who have been recruited to the Twin Cities and do not have local family or a cultural community. The People's Theory of Health is "Individualism, loss of community and culture cause illness." The CWC mission is "to unleash the power of citizens to heal themselves and to build community." Ethics Consultation: Research shows that ethnic minority groups and disenfranchised people are less likely to utilize end-of-life planning or to write advance directives, and more likely to demand life prolonging treatments. These groups are also more likely to mistrust the motives of the healthcare system and believe that there is inequality in treatment. The literature shows that African-Americans receive less high resource care than other hospitalized patients at the end-of-life, even though they tend to prefer more life prolonging treatments. Then there is the "Tuskegee Syphilis Study" which for many African-Americans is the single reason for mistrust of medical and public health institutions. Harriet Washington's book "Medical Apartheid" is a well documented account of many other reasons. These groups also hold spiritual beliefs about death and dying, suffering and pain that is couched in their culture. These cultural beliefs can be a valuable resource for healing health practices but must be respected and acknowledged to be activated. My culturally enhanced ethics facilitation approach is designed to bring about a consensus among interested parties by identifying and analyzing the culture and values of affected persons and facilitating consensus in light of those values.Specialties: I have a culturally based approach to ethics consultation.
