Reporting to the university's Vice-Chancellor and Principal, I serve the Christchurch community through University of Canterbury (UC) Faculty of Engineering. UC Engineering includes a number of game-changing schools - ranging from product design, forestry, mathematics, engineering, computing, and others; there's a transdisciplinary connectivity and one that continues to be transformative globally. As an academic, I advance scholarship in mm-wave microelectronics; this is an enabling integrated technology for 5G and 6G telecommunications.

IEEE nominates members to the ABET Board (now the Board of Delegates) – as member of the nominations and appointments committee, I ensure that nominations are fairly considered and then brought to the IEEE Educational Activities Board.

Institutional level accountability for executive portfolios: Research and Innovation, Internationalisation, Postgraduate Studies and the Library. Furthermore, the University has shareholding in a number of companies. To bring about the innovation-commercialisation nexus, I serve as chair or member of university-company boards.Strategic driver for excellence in research, innovation and internationalisation – leading to Global Excellence and Stature (GES), UJ Strategic Goal, 2025. A significant component of the work achieved here is to contextualise the University’s GES strategy for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0). On 19 Mar. 2019, the strategic contextualisation or catalyst initiative received the approval of the UJ Council. The GES “4.0” budget exceeds ZAR 550 m, excl. the ICS infrastructure (an additional ZAR 127 m).

As Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, I’ve overall responsibility. My tasks include implementation of the UJ strategy through the faculty, which constitutes over 9,500 undergraduate students, postgraduate students and postdoctoral research fellows. The faculty benefits from a staff complement of over 250 (full-time) and over 500 part-time/contract/temporary staff per annum.

The original Transactions of the SAIEE journal was established in 1909 at the same time as the South African Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Its purpose was to serve as a medium of communications for the fledgling institute and to serve the interests of the electrical community in South Africa. Until approximately 1984, it carried news of the institute, published transcripts of papers presented at institute meetings, and peer reviewed papers. Around this time it was deemed appropriate to split the Transactions into two parts, ELEKTRON, which was to continue to serve as a communications medium for the institute, and which would carry articles of a general nature (not peer reviewed), and the Transactions, which would henceforth carry only peer reviewed articles. In accord with this history, the Transactions of the SAIEE was currently running at Volume 96 (2005).Since 2005, the title "Transactions of the SAIEE" changed to "SAIEE Africa Research Journal."The Journal is accredited by the South African Dept. of Education, implying that South African academic institutes are eligible for government subsidy for articles published by members from their institutes.

Metropolitan Trading Company (MTC) - a Metropolitan Owned Enterprise (MOE), City of JohannesburgMTC is further mandated to provision services to the City as set out below:> Manage the delivery of the City’s Smart City objectives.> Manage the City’s ICT operations.> Manage and coordinate access to and use of the City’s telecommunications assets in partnership with the Department/MOE responsible.> Contract with and oversee parties granted approval to use the telecommunication assets.> Maintain a city wide database of telecommunications assets.> Facilitate the processing of telecommunications related way leaves and rights of use.> Regularly inspect telecommunication assets and establish that they are in a good state of use as well as monitor reinstatements.> Ensure compliance with relevant City policies and By Laws related to the City’s telecommunications assets.

Postgraduate and research leadership in mm-Wave integrated circuit research/design.

The Dept. of Electrical, Electronic & Computer Engineering is one of the largest dept. of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. The dept. consists of some 2,000 students, and serves to contribute towards 25 % of engineers in this category in South Africa. The teaching focus of the dept. can be summarized as: high‐quality technological development (as well as its applications and management) contributing to the growth of South African economy. To facilitate and promote research in the dept., the dept. is spread into several research groups, such as bioengineering, computer networks, software engineering, microelectronics engineering, control engineering, etc – in the process, aligning students (as they approach their final undergraduate year) to one of the disciplines to eventually progress them beyond undergraduate qualification to postgraduate students. The dept. also well‐aligns itself (through established affinity groups, such as the IEEE Women‐in‐Engineering, Community Based Project, etc) to enable a culture of strengthened diversity as present in South Africa & internationally.The Carl and Emily Fuchs Institute for Microelectronics (CEFIM) is home to the research group: Electronics and Microelectronics.The academic programmes of the dept. are accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). ECSA is a fully admitted member of the Washington Accord. The admission implies that all degree programmes accredited by ECSA is to be recognized by the co‐signatories of the Accord. The co‐signatories of the Accord are the United States of America (USA), Australia, Canada, Republic of Ireland, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) and the United Kingdom (UK).The School of Engineering falls within the top 1 % in the world. Within South Africa, UP is the top engineering school/institution. On the world list for Engineering Schools UP is ranked 601 of 1217 (Thompson Reuters Essential Science Indicators).
