We are a small organic farm dedicated to the use of Permaculture principles and methods. Using an holistic approach, including raising goats, chickens, and cows to provide organic matter to feed our soil, we aim to grow a variety of grain, legumes, pulses, vegetables, and fruit. Our role is to nurture the soil, while nature takes care of everything else.

USAID’s Strengthening Systems for Better Health (SSBH) Activity is a 5-year project aimed at improving health outcomes in Nepal, particularly for the most marginalized and disadvantaged groups in the country. An internship position with the Education Department based at the UNESCO office in Kathmandu, Nepal, involving writing, editing, and maintaining records and reports for programs under Education Department. Coordination with government agencies and other external partners expected, as well as organizing training workshops for policy makers and education officials. Further responsibilities include reporting to United Nations Peace Fund for Nepal (UNPFN) on completed agenda and future activities.

A research internship position involving field-based data collection, consolidation, and interpretation. The focus of this research is the spread of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) among transportation workers, men in uniform, and clients of Commercial Sex Workers (CSWs) in the Terai region of Nepal. The data that is to be collected is mainly qualitative, involving interviews with healthcare workers who are directly involved in STI treatment for the target groups.

An intense laboratory experience, involving work with Xenopus tropicalis (African clawed frog) species and their embryonic development. Laboratory research involved tagging frog embryos for specific genes, determining when and in which region the gene is expressed during development, and analyzing possible functions of the gene of interest.

During the summer, the lab consisted largely of developing mutant strains of various species of bacteria, with a special focus given to Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Its growth patterns and resistance were studied by inducing specific mutations to various genes and plating this bacteria on different growth media. During the school year, computational research was conducted using annotated genes of A.tumefaciens and studying the sequences of its genome.
