I had the honor of becoming a Community Engagement fellow at the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research. During my fellowship, I studied data collected from a village located in Boca Manu, Peru. Children in the village were asked to read a book educating them about the Endangered Giant River Otter and other valuable species in the area. The point of the book was to encourage them not to harm the endangered species and to treat their local ecosystem with care. Prior to the reading, the children were asked to draw their ecosystems and encouraged to draw and label species within their creation if they were present. After the reading was completed, researchers followed up by asking them to complete a post drawing and post-questionnaire to identify whether or not the reading increased their environmental education. My goal was to study the experiment and create a rubric to understand whether or not drawings are a valuable tool in environmental education practices cross culturally. The rubric created can be used for researchers and scientist to use in similar studies around the world.

Spent several months researching endangered desert tortoises and the effects that Off-Highway Vehicles (OHV’s) have on the tortoise’s declining populations. Conducted field work to study and pinpoint the location of tortoise dens and their relativity to OHV trails. I then used Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to manage and store my findings. After preparing my data, I educated the community on how to operate OHV’s without harming the tortoises so that they could coexist.
