“Who on earth hired someone like you for this position?”Those are never words you hope to hear on your first day at a new job, and as a former educator taking a leap into nonprofit management, they were less-than-encouraging. Within four months, however, the speaker ate his words.As it turned out, someone with a background in education was a great fit for a growing organization seeking to revamp the support services department and position the organization for future development. I quickly became everyone’s go-to for creating solutions to the nagging administrative problems getting in the way of the larger purposes at hand.Some problems I help solve on a daily basis:-Relieving key personnel from the distractions of running the day-to-day support services activities-Creating order where established processes do not exist-Ensuring the completion of milestones for various projects at a time-Making sure no details of administrative tasks fall through the cracks-Engaging consultants to fill in the gaps where our systems lack proficiencyAnd by the way, staying organized is the heart and soul of how I operate. If there’s a corner of the office that doesn’t have a color-coded label, it’s just because I haven’t found it yet. In short, I love doing the behind-the-scenes work that helps an organization with a meaningful mission accomplish its broader goals.
