Climate, Migration & Colonialism: An Event History Analysis Of Determinants Of Peace
I completed this project in fulfilment of my master's thesis requirements at the Hertie School for my Master of Public Policy in spring 2024. ABSTRACT:Climate is an established driver of conflict and will continue to play a key role in migration decisions. As transnational phenomena, the consequences of climate and migration each transcend national boundaries, while states which have contributed the least to climate crises are most vulnerable to the consequences. This study aims to isolate dynamics informing this unequal impact on conflict in terms of climate, migration and colonialism. A state’s risk of humanitarian crises and disasters proves critical in studying the relationship between climate and conflict. Evidence supports that a state’s susceptibility to humanitarian crises and disasters is positively associated with the length of its conflicts, even after accounting for other related factors including geographical region, migration flow and colonial history. The results of this study underscore the importance of centering climate justice, viewing climate and migration as transnational concerns and rectifying the legacies of the past which inform the crises of the future in climate and security policy.
