I'm a builder, an educator, a storyteller and an innovator. I developed a love of stories, writing and reading early in my life, and that's what led me to the field of journalism. Working in the news industry has made me passionate about the distribution of good information, and just as passionate about combating the efforts of those who try to spread chaos with disinformation. I believe that one of the biggest problems our world faces is a crisis of information, which is tied to other existential threats such as climate change and inequality. It gives me great satisfaction to feel like I'm doing something that helps address these issues. I've worked in many different jobs at Gannett over the years, and that experience has equipped me with a unique combination of skills that I'm always trying to build upon and expand. I've always had an aptitude for computers, which is why I taught myself a variety of programming languages, such as JavaScript and Python. I get great satisfaction from building apps and sites, and I often like to take a hands-on role in the projects I'm involved in. I've also had opportunities to work with and analyze the latest technology that will play an important role in our lives, such as VR/AR and artificial intelligence. And since I speak the language of both content creators and developers, I've been able to coordinate efforts between those two worlds. I enjoy acting as a mentor to coworkers and sharing knowledge on skills to help them improve their work. That's one reason I became an adjunct professor at ASU, teaching web coding, multimedia editing and ethics/best practices in online journalism. In that role, I've learned to be comfortable speaking in front of groups and have honed my ability to present information in a clear and concise fashion. I've used those skills extensively, conducting training sessions and working one-on-one with colleagues.I'm also fascinated by what lies just over the horizon, the possibilities that await us if humanity goes down one path or another, which has led me to take a long-term, expansive view of the world. My current job allows me to utilize all of my interests and skills in order to chart a path forward for not just my organization, but journalism and information dissemination as a whole. Blending a strong storytelling background and understanding its essential components, along with a deep understanding of technology and how it impacts our society, allows me to identify new areas of opportunity, how to take advantage of them, and how to effectively communicate that information.
