Construction Project ManagerConstruction For Change Mar 2017 - Feb 2021Seattle, WashingtonHillside Church Paradise Parking Plots - Community Garden & Teaching Kitchen This project is a collaboration between Construction for Change and World Relief Seattle. The project is re-purposing an existing, underutilized church parking lot in Kent, WA into a community garden for refugees. This area is considered a food desert in a community consisting of a large majority of recent immigrants, refugees and asylees. My role as project manager is overseeing and facilitating volunteer events that enabled the parking lot to be transformed into a community garden. I have utilized my professional construction experience and relationships to schedule and coordinate the physical work. Works closely with World Relief to ensure project goals are being met, assists in budget management and provides pricing exercises. Facilitates and coordinates with engineers to validate project details meet local building codes, longevity and general safety. Solicits donations of materials, donations and volunteers. This project has taken place over several years and phases, starting with the original depavement of the parking lot, constructing planting beds and compost areas, running irrigation lines and coordinating rain water collection and distribution. The last phase of this project is to construct an exterior shelter for cleaning fruit and vegetables and training. The ktichen project is transforming an existing church kitchen into a commercial kitchen. The purpose of the commercial kitchen is to create a teaching facility to train immigates, refugees and asylees. Additionally, as a commercial kitchen, individuals will be able to sell their products created in this kitchen. We have worked closely with architects, engineers and World Relief to create the ideal teaching kitchen design. The next steps include refining the construction budget and schedule. As this work is funded by grants, our team will solicit extensive volunteer services and donations to construct this kitchen. -
Construction Project ManagerConstruction For Change Jan 2019 - Apr 2019Nakaseke, UgandaVolunteer project manager for the ACCESS Medical Centre in Nakaseke, Uganda. The project was to construct a medical center/birthing clinic to train midwifery. As one of the onsite project managers, I worked intimately with the construction team daily to ensure appropriate construction processes are being implemented and documentation is being followed. Assisted the general contractor in training proper construction techniques to local unskilled labor. Coordinated design details with local project team and CfC partners internationally. Worked closely with the GC and ACCESS team; developing details, managing and updating budget and resolving conflicts. One of my biggest personal achievements on this project was the introduction to women on the jobsite. Ugandan women typically maintain the family and house; it is very rare to see women working, especially physical work. Our team approached several women from a neighboring facility and held a job-shadowing day for women to experience the construction site. Five women showed up the first day and were carefully trained onsite. After three days, three women remained and joined the construction crew for the remainder of the project. -
