Co Founder
CurrentAs a Co-Founder of EnBiologics, I have worked to bring an innovative new product to the veterinary wound care market with my partner Ramy Habib. We have raised almost $200,000 to do this, conducted clinical trials, marketing research, and business development activities. Our company started as a student project in 2015, and grew to an entrepreneurial venture in 2016, with a major push to be a part of the Detroit Technology Exchange (DTX) at Tech Town. Under leadership from myself, we were invited to the incubation program and have since worked together to bring our product, HoneyCure, to market. Starting out in the horse care segment, we grew slowly and pivoted to the dog and cat companion animal segment after market research. Within a year of the strategy shift, we expanded from 1 store in 1 state, to selling to over 100 stores in 22 states and Canada. We’ve grown the business to a point where it now covers it’s own operating expenses and material costs, with future planning to raise capital to accelerate additional product development and growth activities.
Research Assistant
As a research assistant at Wayne State University I worked in the Sleep Research Lab under Dr. Badr and Dr. Sankari of the Wayne State Medical School's Depart of Internal Medicine. The lab specializes in Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine research and has several active grants to study sleep apnea at the foundational and clinical level. I worked on studies focused on spinal cord injury and sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, and behavioral sleep medicine. My role in the lab was that of a biomedical engineer and research assistant. I worked to engineer and design applications in the lab in addition to managing studies. The lab uses LabChart for data analysis and Microsoft Access for data management. I worked on automation of our data analysis, improving the data acquisition systems, conducted interventional studies, and coordinated a clinical trial. I worked with LabChart, Python, VBA, R, REDCap, STATA, and SQL in data analysis workflows.
Graduate Research Assistant
I worked on continuing on a project similar to my undergraduate research. I investigated the formation of the films and the degradation of them, which leads to formation of small particles on their surfaces. This research is a much more in-depth analysis of the degradation characteristics of a film and how DNA is eventually uptake by cells. The process of particle formation is not very well understood but plays an essential role in how cells transfect DNA. My research was at first meant to entail studies with AFM, SEM, Zetasizer measurements, and TIRF imaging. I learned to use TIRF imaging simultaneously with AFM and developed an experimental procedure for FRET analysis using his technique. However due to budget concerns by my adviser my project was refined to leverage investigations by AFM and DLS. As such I was not fully able to be trained with SEM. However I still have developed an intimate understanding of surface chemistry and the interface of a film with a cell. I completed my project and defended my thesis for February 7 of 2017.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
I prepared layer-by-layer films of polycations and DNA on glass slides or sutures depositing films manually or using a programmable machine. I performed AFM analysis of the films andpresented to the research group regularly. Process and apparatus design in the lab was one of my tasks and many of the designs I fabricated were implemented in our processes. I completed a research paper in conjunction with Yi Zou and Dr. Guangzhao Mao. Under Dr. Mao's supervision we published to Biomacromolecules and our paper was accepted. DOI:10.1021/bm5010433.
Undergraduate Student Assistant
As a student assistant in the College of Education, I worked for Academic Services. I answered phones, answering general questions about undergraduate programs and State of Michigan teacher certification. I managed the Level 1 files(pre-professional track undergrads) reorganizing the paper file system and making the 4-D electronic database system much easier to understand. I also worked for the advisers, returning a number of reports on data, doing mailings, and a number of other jobs.
Contract Tutor
I offered tutoring in all subject areas. This experience demanded that I interact with a variety of clients in different areas of the Detroit Area. I earned a reputation as a reliable and flexible tutor who was able to assist struggling or problematic students. To be effective at this job I had to maintain good service responsibilities and time management. In this experience I have learned to interact with contracting services as well, including TutorDoctor of Grosse Pointe.
Medical Scribe, Trainer,
As a medical scribe I documented physician encounters while they were interacting with patients i the emergency room. I have developed an excellent medical terminology background from this position as well as familiarity with EPIC, an EMR. This was an indirect patient care position were I learned about complex medical conditions and procedures. The position had me shadow and work with doctors and nurses as an integral part of the ER staff. I learned a great deal about being a doctor and ER provider. I also learned that I did not want to pursue a career as a medical doctor from this experience as well as my student experiences. After 9 months of working as a scribe I became an on-site trainer. I worked as a scribe but also trained new scribes in the ER. As a trainer I had to learn to teach a variety of new and young scribes how to do the job. I had to learn to translate my knowledge in multiple understandable ways, as well as learn when to terminate scribes that were not able to work at the expected level. I became an integral part of the team's management and training, and was relied on as a go-to trainer when problems arose. In the spring of 2016 I sought to lessen my work hours and commute time so I could focus more on finishing my graduate degree. I applied for a position within PhysAssist as a Scribe University Coordinator, which is an online trainer/educator for new hires. I trained in the position and learned to interact with new scribes. I learned to leverage online learning management software to educate them. Shortly after I started the training I left the company in pursuit of opportunities that were more beneficial to my career.
Clinical Engineering Intern
Under Rocco Ottolino and Micheal Tanner, I and 2 other interns are a part of a 1 semester program (starting January 12th 2015 and running until April 29th 2015) to introduce us to clinical engineering and gain real life work experience at William Beaumont Hospital. As interns we are responsible for the full range of clinical engineering responsibilities that are time permitting for us. This includes cataloging of medical devices, design projects, project management, new device evaluation, FDA reporting, device support, and just about anything the department is given. As an intern we also observe medical procedures in the hospital that rely on medical instrumentation, such as robotic surgery and catheter procedures.
