SCD REDefined is redefining the way we approach, think, communicate, and treat Sickle Cell. Research shows various communities around the world are affected by SCD, but many people do not know about the disease or its hereditary implications. Due to the stigma associated with the illness, there is a critical need for education, awareness, and prevention to promote understanding and eventually a cure. The innovation of SCD REDefined lies in its capability to provide a patient-physician interface which integrates advanced social media technologies and multiple self-care management tools in one application, eliminating the drawbacks of current tools. The SCD Redefined tool seeks to promote awareness of SCD, eliminate the stigma, connect patients to community support groups, provide a channel for patients and families to measure pain episodes, educate healthcare providers to monitor and control pain opioid management, and offer alternative means of pain management. There has been an increasingly large number of patients with SCD who rely on social media for support and to find health information. SCD REDefined combines the need for social engagement with self-care-management, fulfilling a critical need in the SCD community. SCD Redefined creates a truly integrated, high-quality experience built on a collaborative care pathway design, and proactive communication to patient, caregivers, and the community. Empowering the SCD community is at the core of SCD REDefined. It is our aim to globally spread awareness about SCD and show the world that the SCD community is not weak, but in fact our greatest warriors, despite their disease status; thus,redefining what it means to have SCD. SCD REDefined tool was developed with invaluable feedback from our mentoring non-profit SCD organizations (TOVA Healthcare-Dr. Nina Anderson) and medical practitioners (Alfred I.Nemours DuPont Hospital for Children-Dr. Anders Kolb) which enabled further advancement of the application and indicates significant implications for the utility of social media and self-care technologies in advancing SCD-related research and treatment methods. The tool was surveyed by 103 respondents and findings show that engagement via social groups (testimonials) were the most desirable (65%), SCD educational elements (25%), treatment (8%) and other (2%). Preliminary findings also show that participants highly rated the integration of social media and self-care management features of the tool and plan to continue engagement with SCD REDefined outreach and awareness events.
