I lead a small educational therapy practice in West LA, a group of experts who help children, adolescents, and adults to basically get more effective at whatever it is that they want to do. Our clients typically have difficulties or disorders in attention, cognition, or emotional regulation that are limiting their progress. We give strategic support, practical, adaptive guidance, to help them level up.My first passion is the natural sciences; I had a career as a biochemist before moving into education. And I take a engineer's approach to working with clients: we define a problem, cast the best possible solution to the problem based on a deep understanding of the field, evaluate how well the solution worked, then iterate. Along the way, it's kinda fun. 🌈We're always looking for brilliant new people to work with us. If you know of anyone looking to help kids or young adults to get more effective at what they do, please have them get in touch!

Science InstructorVistamar School Aug 2017 - Aug 2021Los Angeles, California, United StatesAt Vistamar, I broadened my scope and skills as an educator, teaching biology, chemistry, and physics at the non-AP level for grades 9-12, as well as AP Biology. I was proud to increase the rate of our students passing the AP Bio exam from 55 to 80% in my first year, reaching 85% in subsequent years. I was able to implement more effective differentiation of instruction while incorporating methods to learn from textbooks, keeping in mind that our students would need to have this independence in college. I also taught kids how to write as a scientist at all grade levels, including the foundational methods of connecting observations to scientific principles through logical reasoning and the more general writing processes of ideation, organization, drafting, and revision. -
Biology InstructorCrystal Springs Uplands School Sep 2014 - Jun 2017Hillsborough, CaI was a 9th grade biology teacher, my first role as a classroom educator. I learned the fundamentals of classroom instruction and the foundations of cognitive neuroscience, a big step in learning how to help people learn more effectively. -

FounderMath & Science Tutors Sep 2012 - 2014San Francisco, CaI tutored students in math (including Geometry, Algebra I, Algebra II, Precalculus) and science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), as well as standardized test preparation. I introduced students to different learning practices and coached them to find a combination of methods that work for them. These included effective reading and writing skills, in-class note taking and participation, test preparation, and organizational skills. I helped students learn course material provided by their primary educators or develop a complementary curriculum to broaden or deepen their understanding.

Postdoc In The Lab Of Dr. David MorganUcsf 2007 - Oct 2011San Francisco, CaProteins are often degraded after attachment long, lysine 48-linked chains of ubiquitin by ubiquitin ligases. I found that short ubiquitin chains are rapidly removed from proteins by deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs), but that long chains are resistant to removal. This re- sistance is lost if the closed structure of the Lys48-linkage is disrupted or replaced with an open linkage type. My results suggest that the structure of ubiquitin chains may promote a two-state system wherein labile proteins are either stabilized through the removal of short ubiquitin chains by DUBs, or degraded as a consequence of bearing long ubiquitin chains. -
Graduate Student In The Lab Of Dr. Linda BreedenFred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Dec 2001 - Mar 2007The tumor suppressor protein Rb is a transcriptional corepressor that prevents cell-cycle initiation until it is neutralized by early G1 cyclin-dependent kinase activity. I found that the transcription factor Swi6, the target of the yeast analog of Rb, Whi5, is phosphorylated on sites that promote neutralization of Whi5. I identified a kinase that can target these sites and characterized a phosphomimetic substitution in Swi6 that appears to link nutrient-response pathways to cell-cycle initiation. Additionally, I found two pathways that contribute to cell-cycle initiation independently of Whi5. -
Graduate Student In The Lab Of Dr. Joseph BeavoUniversity Of Washington Aug 1999 - Dec 2001I developed data mining software that identified complete sequences of novel human cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases. I also characterized the kinetics and specificity of a trypanosomal isozyme. I was a contributing author on two papers published in PNAS, based on the findings in these studies. I also developed a networked database for distributed curation of scientific literature, facilitating further research into phosphodiesterases. -
Manager, Molecular Genetics Core Facility For Diabetes And Endocrinology Research CenterUniversity Of Washington Aug 1996 - Aug 1999Seattle, WaIn my first year, I expanded the facility’s research and training services, making the it profit- able for the first time since it’s inception two years earlier. Our services and client base con- tinued to grow in subsequent years, allowing us to hire staff and equipment necessary for cutting-edge studies. I collaborated with cell biologists and physician scientists to identify and create tools aligned with their research needs. I also developed curricula and training seminars on the techniques I developed. My position was filled with a Ph.D. scientist when I left for graduate school. -
