About Alex Scheepens
► I'm a Ph.D. Candidate in the History Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I received my M.A. in European Studies (2016) and B.A. in International Relations and History (2014), both from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and completed a second M.A. in History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2021).► My current research centers on the Jewish experience in hiding in Nazi-occupied Netherlands. I employ an integrated analytical framework of both a geographical lens and a history of emotions. My work draws on a wide array of written and oral sources in the Dutch, English, Hebrew, and German languages, including diaries, letters, memoirs, family records, interviews, and local histories. ► I received multiple fellowships and grants in support of my research, including from the Claims Conference; the Holocaust Educational Foundation of Northwestern University; the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure; the American Academy for Jewish Research; the George L. Mosse Program in Jewish History; the Mosse/Weinstein Center for Jewish Studies; and the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.► My research on the Holocaust and work in Jewish history has earned me numerous awards and prizes. My master’s thesis (“A Spatial Analysis of Emotions: The Jewish Experience in Hiding in the Dutch Countryside during the Nazi Occupation, 1940-1945”) has won the Paul J. Schrag Prize in German Jewish History and the Ida and Isaac Lipton Essay Award.► My teaching and research interests range from topics in modern European Jewish history and the Holocaust to the history of antisemitism, Zionism, and the State of Israel.► I am looking forward to expanding my expertise in the digital humanities and public history. My goal is to gain a more comprehensive understanding of how technology intersects with historical research and public engagement, making the history of the Holocaust accessible to a wider audience.► I have experience working as a public educator, guest lecturer, and historical consultant. In these roles, I have developed and delivered educational lectures and collaborated with organizations to shape Holocaust education.► Besides my academic work, I'm also an experienced Hebrew teacher with a demonstrated history of working in various educational settings. In the last two decades, I've also acquired working experience in copyediting, translating, graphic design, web developing, and social media, as well as in the security and intelligence sectors.
