Tyler’s work at Scheid Vineyards culminated in leading a company wide initiative to develop new, and upgrade existing, business process in order to meet the challenges of a rapidly growing company that was making a strategic shift from a primarily "business to business" (eg. producing bulk grapes and wine for other wineries) to a "business to consumer" enterprise (eg. creating and producing wine brands for consumers). This was an exciting time as whole new departments and new operational… Show more Tyler’s work at Scheid Vineyards culminated in leading a company wide initiative to develop new, and upgrade existing, business process in order to meet the challenges of a rapidly growing company that was making a strategic shift from a primarily "business to business" (eg. producing bulk grapes and wine for other wineries) to a "business to consumer" enterprise (eg. creating and producing wine brands for consumers). This was an exciting time as whole new departments and new operational capabilities were being brought on line in rapid succession (cased wine production, warehouse operations, marketing, sales and operations planning, branded goods sales), where the company grew from approximately 75 to 150 full time salary employees. Tyler was tasked with facilitating the development of the strategic roadmap for this business operations transition, and project managing the rollout of the roadmap implementation. Tyler directly led and facilitated department and cross department workgroups, he managed the consulting and technology implementation teams, and helped the Information Technology team roll out a series of new technologies and data analytics systems (Enterprise Resource Planning, Customer Relationship Management, Business Intelligence, Financial Management, Human Resources, Lean Manufacturing, and a range of agriculture field technologies).The element that really brought Tyler alive was working across the company, directly with individual employees, working groups, and specialized outside experts to solve innumerable challenges during this business transition. This monitoring program directly addresses the 303(d) listing of the Animas as an impaired waterbody due to excess nutrient loading.Tyler designed and implemented a Basin-wide water quality database that integrates monitoring data from many agencies, allowing the project team to assess long term trends in water quality and water quality ‘hot spots’. The database was integrated into a GIS for correlation analysis with land cover data and spatial comparison to new data collected for the monitoring programConstruct a GIS database to determine land use changes in the watershed compared to observed nutrient and periphyton data. Tyler served an advisory role to the Workgroup as well as creating a GIS database to increase the technical capabilities of the Animas River Nutrient Workgroup to identify whether the Animas is impaired by excessive algal growth. Tyler worked primarily on the Lynx Habitat Modeling project, utilizing digital elevation models to calculate watershed boundaries, slope, aspect, and elevation to delineate prime Lynx Habitat for use by the Forest Service and other project collaborators. Tyler had access to world class computing facilities and software provided by Colorado State University, including ESRI ArcInfo, ERDAS Imagine, and other imagery analysis software of the day.

Tyler worked on implementing the Port Information Network Operations (PINOPS) system for the USDA APHIS unit in Fort Collins. The PinOps system was designed to capture cargo information at ports of entry to the US to track product being held for inspection. As part of his job, Tyler visited Port Houston with the APHIS team to gather feedback on the beta release of the PINOPS system.

Tyler lived in a small trailer on the Hames Valley Ranch as the family vineyard business (then called Scheid Vineyards) was developing the new 1000 acre vineyard. The El Nino storms that spring brought unprecedented rains and flooding to the property, stoking Tyler's interest in erosion control and watershed restoration which led to his pursuing a Master's degree in Watershed Science. His biggest accomplishment that year was working day in and day out with all the crews, tractor drivers, and his ranch manager Javier to turn the ranch into a world class vineyard. They prepped ground, banged in stakes, set up trellis, rescued stuck tractors, fixed burst pipes, and found time on Saturdays to share field cooked and freshly harvested carnitas with cold cervesas. Over 10 years later, Tyler found the irrigation detail map that he created with all the specs for finely tuned irrigation sets (pump pressures, motor RPMs, valves, blocks, etc.) on Javier's wall in the new shop, still being used by Jaime the irrigator that Tyler trained that year before heading off to Colorado for grad school. Working for the San Luis Obispo Fire Department, I updated GIS data for the Emergency Response Map Book, and created the Hazardous Materials data layer to add to the map book from an existing tabular dataset.
