Since April 2016 until January 2023 Michael Schmidt was been Chairman of the Central Staff at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. He was been in charge for about 3.000 employees in 5 different offices: next to the Ministry also the Federal Insurance Office, the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health as well as two Supreme Courts: the Federal Social Court and the the Federal Labour Court. Since 1992 Michael Schmidt has worked for the Ministry. He started off in the division for social security, since 2000 he worked in the international division in the field of coordination of social insurance. Since many years he works as a consultant for German and international organizations and companies in different countries worldwide. Furthermore he lectures in the field of social security.Michael Schmidt also has numerous publications to show for himself, next to articles in social law literature, as for instance books on pension insurance and on long term care insurance but also the development of the job market.

  Berufliche Tätigkeit:Von April 2016 bis Oktober 2022 Vorsitzender des Hauptpersonalrates beim BMASEr war für über 3.000 Beschäftigte in fünf Behörden zuständig: neben dem Bundesministerium für Arbeit und Soziales (BMAS) auch das Bundessozialgericht, das Bundesarbeitsgericht, das Bundesamt für Soziale Sicherung sowie die Bundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz- und Arbeitsmedizin.Michael Schmidt war seit 1992 bis Januar im BMAS tätig. Erst in der Abteilung Sozialversicherung, dann seit dem Jahr 2000 in der internationalen Abteilung im Bereich der Koordinierung des Sozialrechts. Er ist seit vielen Jahren als Berater für deutsche und internationale Organisationen und Unternehmen in vielen Ländern weltweit tätig. Darüber hinaus ist er Dozent im Bereich der sozialen Sicherheit. Schmidt hat darüber hinaus zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen aufzuweisen, neben Aufsätzen in sozialrechtlichen Fachzeitungen, unter anderem Bücher zur Rentenversicherung und zur Pflegeversicherung, aber auch zur Entwicklung des Arbeitsmarktes.
