I joined AI2 early on and advocated for a strong engineering team to help AI2 meet its research goals. As the company has grown, my role has shifted from a technical team lead, to a manager, to the director of engineering. Initially I helped build project Aristo's initial software and consolidated the company on a standard language. Subsequently I managed the Semantic Scholar project--an endeavor to build the next-generation academic search engine (http://www.semanticscholar.com). Currently I'm working with teams at AI2 to move our software onto Kubernetes, build a framework for running and understanding experiments, and invest in a library to speed up our cycle of Deep Learning research on PyTorch.

I researched open-domain information extraction and natural language processing. As part of the research team, I built tools to facilitate research, such as a regular expression library that runs over arbitrary objects, while also researching and developing the core Open IE system. As the engineering lead for the group, I managed development tools for large-scale computing (Hadoop), collaborated outside the university on key grants, and trained engineering principles and quality software practices to students and peers.

I entered eBay through the acquisition of Positronic. I worked on the search quality team, an applied research team, dedicated to improving eBay's search technology and to developing new and innovative applications to connect users with products. I co-developed an image similarity search experience which helped shoppers find items visually similar to a target image.

I developed a system to compute thousands of functions over financial data, wrote a modeling system, and extended the capabilities of a genetic algorithm.

Developed the PanImages tool to translate words into languages with indirect dictionary connections (i.e. Bengali into Basque where no direct dictionary is available) and group the translations by the different senses of the source word (i.e. distinguish translations of the season spring from translations of "flexible coil"). This work is visible on a frontend that connects these translations to google images, providing a panlingual image search. Check it out: http://www.panimages.org/.

Instructed part of a 5-credit computer science course that covers basic data structures and algorithms in Java, and managed some 40 TAs along with the infrastructure of the introductory undergraduate TA program. Weekly duties included teaching, meeting with the lecturers, running TA meetings, and training incoming TAs.
