Dr. Tjerk Jan Schuitmaker is education developer and researcher at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies at the UvA. He is interested in sustainability transitions in health care on the levels of sustainable health and how this supports financial tentability as well as environmental impacts of health care services. He co-creates educational and research programs to drive the transformation. As projectlead of NATURELAB, a European consoritum working to investigate the benefits of nature-based therapies, he alligned NBT's with existing health care structures.With 'Welzijn op Recept' he aims to implement a new health care concept. Within 'Learning and Improving in health care' he worked with ZonMW on methodology development and research for continuous learning and improving. He monitored and evaluated HiNoord! (https://hinoord.nl/) in their quest for speeding up the transition to care of health, in contrast to care for disease. Within Doing eHealth Right (https://digitaleinclusie.com/Doing-eHealth-right) he contributes to inclusive eHealth development. He has worked with ZiNL on 'Green Metrics'; incorporating environmental impacts in HTA. He was workstream leader within the PARADIGM consortium (www.imi-paradigm.eu) focussed on developing tools for monitoring and evaluating value and impact of patient engagement. Within 'Het Bewustzijnspoject' he supported the implementation of High Value Cost Conscious Care (doelmatige zorg) projects. With SUPREME NUDGE he worked on supporting a healthy life style through supermarkets in order to battle non-communicable diseases like diabetes. After his graduation as a Biomedical Scientists with a specialisation in neurology he obtained his PhD in the field of Political Science. His dissertation is about persistent problems in the Dutch Health Care System and subsequent work focuses on solving these complex problems. He conducted this research at the AISSR of the University of Amsterdam, as part of the KSI-network, dealing with sustainability transitions.As lecturer Tjerk Jan teaches a wide range of (honours) courses on the interaction between science, technology and society. He has supervised over 200 internships and theses of master students.
