Head Of Product & Technology
CurrentDelos uses cutting edge climate science and artificial intelligence to build what we believe is the best wildfire risk model in the world. After all the recent climate fires (which ultimately pushed my family out of the house I grew up in), hundreds of thousands of Californians lost their home insurance because their insurance companies realized they didn't understand the risk well enough to offer policies. With our technology, we can identify which homes are actually safe to insure, even though all the other companies incorrectly believe they are at high risk. We provide comprehensive home insurance policies to these people who no one else will insure. When I joined as Head of Product and Technology there were only 3 full-time employees and we had zero policies to our name. As of November 2024 we insure over $40 billion worth of property in California and we're doing our part to help with climate resilience.https://www.getdelos.com
Founder & Ceo
CurrentMoneyVoice was founded to help people have a positive impact on the world every time they buy something. In our consumer feedback app, users import transaction data, and for every purchase they make at any business they earn one vote, which gives them the right to vote for what they want the business to do. This is a faster, easier, and more emotionally-fulfilling way for people to give feedback to businesses. For businesses, we offer authentic feedback from verified customers that is paired with rich financial data, as well as unparalleled opportunities for customer engagement that are both personalized and scalable. As CEO I led product development, raised about half a million in investment, built a full-time team of 8 (including 6 engineers), launched a consumer app with promising traction, and executed successful pilots with various businesses (eg: Good Eggs) engaging with customers and making changes based on customer feedback. We ran out of money after I failed to convince larger investors that our consumer growth plan would work. Then COVID delayed our comeback plan, but we'll be back eventually...See more: https://brentschulkin.com/#moneyvoice
Founder & General Partner
CurrentWe are producing a theatrical hip hop musical about startups. It started with four startup founders doing freestyle hip hop just for fun. Then we wrote an album. Which became a musical. We did our first sold-out performance in 2016, followed by performances at Silicon Valley Fashion Week, 500 Startups Demo Day, and more. We raised $27k on Kickstarter to improve our show, and in June 2018 did a 3 night theatrical run along with an expanded cast of collaborators and leading figures in Bay Area hip hop culture. Highlights here: https://youtu.be/6aNnatis208Here's an example song (which I wrote most of): https://youtu.be/ihwJQ9249KAI've spent less time on writing and acting in the past couple years as more world-class creatives have joined the team to push the vision forward. We now have a new version of the script, and the show is now called "CO-FOUNDERS". In June 2023 the show was commissioned by A.C.T. (American Conservatory Theater). This partnership brings us one step closer to a major new stage production. Details: https://www.cofoundersthemusical.com/Reid Hoffman also hired us to produce this viral video about Bitcoin (nearly 2 million views): https://youtu.be/JaMJi1_1tkA...and a year later he worked with us to produce a series of strategic anti-Trump rap cartoons targeted aimed at influencing moderate Republicans. In summer 2020 the NY Times called Rhyme Combinator "a viral media company that promotes artistic and progressive causes."
Head Of Startup Programs, Verge
VERGE is the biggest and best climate tech event. I led all startup programs for this event in both 2019 and 2020. I designed sessions for climate tech founders, and also ran the Accelerate pitch competition. I led selection of all the startups who pitched over two years, including several big names who have now raised eight-figure investment rounds. For VERGE I also produced invite-only VIP summits focused on grid resilience, commercial zero-emission vehicles, and food waste. These events brought together leaders from industry-leading companies, governments, thought leaders and startups.
Head Of Product
CCP was a full-service back-end provider for cities interested in launching clean energy programs. It was founded to scale Community Choice Aggregation, which is a very powerful tool with the potential to revolutionize how our energy system works, and rapidly accelerate our transition to renewable power (more info: http://bit.ly/1DerRwN). The problem is it's hard to scale, and CA Clean Power was created to make it easy. I joined to start from scratch and lead design and development of all the technology, including a custom-built CRM, custom telephony software to support a call center, and support for meter & billing data transfer with CA utilities, a bank, CAISO, etc. After hiring designers and engineers to build the software in a fast-moving agile environment, the company was acquired by Pilot Power Group shortly before launch.

The Carrotmob story is best viewed here: https://brentschulkin.com/#carrotmob>>>In a Carrotmob campaign, people spend money at a business, and in return, the business takes an action the people want. Since inventing this idea and organizing the 1st Carrotmob campaign in 2008, I have built and led a global movement around this idea. Over $1M has been spent in hundreds of campaigns in 20+ countries. From 2011-2013 I ran a company that explored four approaches to expanding the Carrotmob movement:1. We built tools for community organizers.2. We built a product for buying products online. Our campaign with Thanksgiving Coffee moved $31k in sales (300% of normal sales). [TV coverage: http://youtu.be/sYj8e1_f-JM]3. We partnered with Unilever to explore large-scale campaigns, driving a 122% lift in sales volume. [See their video about our pilot program: http://youtu.be/aqAEEHjNkr0]4. We built a product for pre-buying vouchers. Our 1st campaign was a hit, so Google hired us to do one for them: http://bit.ly/1qsJaUXWe never found a scalable revenue model. Today, I volunteer my time to support the movement. I still believe the idea will eventually reach it's full potential."Carrotmob is now aiming to use consumers' buying power to shape global supply chains." - Fast Company“I like Carrotmob because it’s all too easy to protest about what you don’t like, but so much more productive to vote with your money for positive change.” - Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever"Civically-minded, tech savvy organization that understands the power of data." - Forbes“Carrotmobs Are Cooler than Boycotts” – Time Magazine“The Carrotmob philosophy has extended across America - and the world” – NY Times
Consultant
I have periodically done consulting projects alongside my other roles. Sample work:Consigliere at The ArcView Group (2014)During a period of extreme growth, I helped the CEO do things he didn't have time for, such as exploring new lines of business, new partnerships, and new technologies. My role was very flexible, filling in wherever needed. For example, I led the press strategy for a major conference in Denver, which was covered live throughout the day by CNBC, and also covered by CBS, Fox Business, and more: https://youtu.be/Qg8z7hNGmtESpeaker & Advisor (2015)I helped design and lead a tour of Silicon Valley for the wealthiest family in France who wanted to learn about the future of retail, omnichannel, and digital trends.EIR at Parliament (2016)Leading an exclusive group of luminaries (ie: Fortune 100 CMOs & best-selling authors) through a collaborative exploration of key questions about the "Future of Brand." Areas of focus include businesses losing control over brands to customers, new forms of engagement that build loyalty, how to understand the customer experience, and what kinds of cooperation among different stakeholders in a company are needed to unlock the full potential of data for brand-building.UX/Marketing Consultant, Nurses for Sexual and Reproductive Health (2020)My friend Sandra and I collaborated on a UX project in which we helped this non-profit design their new membership program. Built a journey map, detailed product plan, and worked on designing the narrative and marketing plan. Proud to help this progressive organization which helps nurses become agents of social change, advancing sexual and reproductive health and justice.

See more: https://brentschulkin.com/#the-spring >>>The Spring gave people the power to fund community projects just by going to eat at certain restaurants in their neighborhood. People joined The Spring by linking their credit card to our app, and then they would simply spend money at any participating business. 3% of every purchase funded local projects that improved the community, plus another 3% was a cash back reward to the customer. To quote Josh Constine's TechCrunch article about us: "The Spring lets you save the world without doing anything... Just eat at great restaurants like you normally would and you make a positive impact in your community." Not to mention earning cash back at the same time. The Spring grew out of Carrotmob. It was created to advance a similar mission of letting people have a positive impact every time they made a purchase decision. But in contrast with Carrotmob, we designed the business model to be a much more simple and frictionless experience for both consumers and businesses. Our launch was very well-received, but ultimately we shut down the company because I came to believe that restaurant margins were too thin for the business model to work over the long term.
Board Observer
One Block Off The Grid (1BOG) was a nationwide solar company that worked with the largest solar providers in the US to create a single online destination for homeowners who want to explore options for going solar.Shortly after I co-founded Virgance, we acquired 1BOG after it's first pilot program in 2008. We originally built it out as a community organizer powered group purchase program that made going solar much easier and much more affordable for typical homeowners. In 2009 we built out the team and took the concept nationwide, simultaneously evolving the model to be more scalable. In 2010 we made 1BOG its own separate company, simultaneously raising a $5M investment for it from NEA. At this time I stepped back from day-to-day work on 1BOG and became a board observer. After 2.5 years of serving as a board observer the company was acquired by Pure Energies in 2012. Then, in October 2014, Pure Energies was acquired by NRG, which is the second-largest power producer in the US. That's how the technology and sales organization we built with 1BOG went on to serve as the foundation of the rapid growth of NRG's residential solar division.
Founder & President
Virgance was an incubator for projects at the intersection of social good and capitalism. Steve Newcomb and I co-founded it in 2008 and over a year and a half we raised a seed round and built a company with over 20 employees. We worked on several different projects, including One Block Off The Grid, Carrotmob, and several others. At the beginning of 2010 we decided to spin out all of our projects to be separate, and renamed the company One Block Off The Grid, reorganizing it to focus exclusively on the solar energy opportunity. The company was acquired by Pure Energies in July 2012.Assorted coverage:http://www.economist.com/node/13031214http://techcrunch.com/2009/02/11/virgance-harnessing-the-community-to-save-the-world-business-plan-included/http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/05/magazine/05wwln-consumed-t.htmlhttp://time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1901467,00.htmlhttp://techcrunch.com/2010/02/10/one-block-off-the-grid-raises-5-million/
Game Developer
The Go Game (www.thegogame.com) produces high-tech urban adventure games. We basically craft customized "Amazing Race"-style events for companies and other organizations looking for a structured experience or just a riotously fun time. I traveled around creating elaborate games from scratch, managing actors, writing missions, facilitating the kidnapping of company executives, producing videos, wielding mobile phones and our proprietary software, making hilarious presentations, and generally orchestrating everything that makes The Go Game so popular. From Puerto Rican resorts to the Calgary city hall to the Mexican desert, I worked closely with many large companies to create one-of-a-kind experiences for tens of thousands of people. Also did a few epic bachelor parties.Sample clients: Adobe, Chevron, Cirque du Soleil, Cisco, Deloitte, Disney, Duke Energy, General Mills, Google, IDEO, Intel, Intuit, McKinsey, Microsoft, MTV, PwC, Safeway, Shell, Sprint, Target, Yahoo, and many more.More: http://www.fastcompany.com/1738329/the-real-life-location-game-that-apple-and-google-staff-loveHistory: http://thenextweb.com/location/2011/08/10/meet-the-go-game-the-godfathers-of-geo/
Filmmaker
Created a documentary film about the US criminal justice system. Selected as the “Feature Documentary” at the Stanford Alumni Film Festival.
Google Adwords Representative (Contractor)
Did editorial work on ads submitted by clients. Also worked on a special project to evaluate a new ad submission system. Quit shortly before the IPO because I knew I didn't want to do that sort of work for a long time. Sometimes the fact that I eschewed that sweet Google stock stings a bit, but I've been happy to have a more entrepreneurial career.
