I am running for Jefferson County Assessor because I believe my background in both real estate and communications will enable me to create a customer-centric office that will benefit the entire county.World-class communication will enable people to understand how properties are assessed, and how values are determined. When I talk to county assessors around the state, I am struck by fact that the counties with the best websites and the best community outreach also typically have lower rates of people appealing their assessments.In addition to being a real estate agent, I have worked in communications through much of my career. I've owned a newspaper, worked as a columnist at the late Rocky Mountain News, been manager of public relations at a Fortune 400 high-tech company and worked as a freelance writer and consultant with such companies as Ford, IBM, GE, Transamerica and many others.I believe that if people understand how the assessor sets values, understand where their tax dollars go, understand how TABOR and Gallagher and other state statutes affect property taxes, they will be less likely to appeal.I have spent time on the websites of all 64 Colorado county assessors, and I know what the best of them are doing to educate taxpayers. I am committed to Jefferson County having one of the best websites and one of the best outreach programs in the state.I will host public meetings throughout the county at least once a month, and I am exploring the possibility of extending office hours and/or holding office hours throughout the county.I will continually pursue the best available technology, and I will create a forward-looking office that is transparent in its work.I would love your support.

While looking for a job after Intelligent Electronics was sold in 1997, I found clients instead and embarked on a successful and fun stint as a self-employed writer. Among my clients and projects:IBM—I wrote copy for newsletters that were sent to clients. For several years, I wrote every article for a quarterly newsletter.GE—I wrote articles for client newsletters and worked on teams that produced marketing materials.Ford initially hired me to write articles for Dealer World, a monthly magazine sent to Ford Dealers. I interviewed dealers as well as Ford executives for these articles. As time went on, I also wrote articles for employee newsletters, content for training manuals and speeches for senior executives.Comcast—I wrote employee newsletters focused on branding. It was my job to explain how to use the company logo and other corporate identifiers.Storage Technology Corporation hired me primarily to write speeches for executives. The company hosted a large convention every year for its customers. Dozens of executives would speak at these. I would begin work months in advance, working with everyone from the CEO to the master of ceremonies and everyone in between. StorageTek flew me to these meetings, all over the U.S. and Canada to be available to help speakers with last minute changes and to work with the Teleprompter operator to ensure that all changes were incorporated.The Rocky Mountain News hired me to write a weekly outdoors column, which I did for the last several years of the Rocky’s existence. I also wrote frequent features and travel articles.I’ve worked with numerous healthcare companies on branding and communications during times of acquisitions and mergers. My work has included helping them name the new organization, write copy for billboards and other advertising, and write copy for employee and client newsletters that explains to these audiences what is happening with the organization.

Was hired as associate editor of one magazine. Was soon promoted to executive editor of the magazine, then named executive editor over all eight B2B magazines published by the company. When I started working at the Fortune 400 computer products and services company, there was virtually no public relations or media relations being done. Slowly, myself and a few others introduced the concept of being proactive in these areas and I was named manager of public relations on top of my editorial duties. As such, I wrote and distributed press releases, arranged media interviews with executives and arranged media coverage of events. Working closely with IT and sales, I was a lead member of the team that created the company web site. The company also had no organized internal communications, so when that need became apparent, I took on those duties. The internal communications part of my job started when the company decided to spin off a division in an IPO and took on more urgency when negotiations began for the company to be purchased by a competitor. As the sale/transition process would take many months, it was important that employees be kept in the loop and that they hear the truth as quickly as they hear rumors. As hundreds of people would ultimately lose their jobs, it was vitally important that the company find ways to motivate solid production until the end in order to ensure a successful sale at top dollar. During this period, I met daily with the Sr. VP of HR, the chief legal counsel and top executives in order to ensure the timely flow of information that was both accurate and in the company’s best interest.
