About Scott Taylor
My favorite experience, when it comes to the work I do, is getting to see the precious end result after putting in the hard work. In research, finally digging up and polishing that metaphorical gemstone of data is something I've found I continue to look forward to. My work so far has given me the hands-on along with the analytical, and I'm looking for opportunities that let me deal with both.In my nearly 4 years of experience in the Meyer Lab at UCLA, I've had the chance to be a jack of all trades in the laboratory. Overall, I've utilized my skills to help keep the lab running and complete a variety of inquiries into cell signaling, including work on resistance pathways in lung cancer and the dynamics of cytokine signaling on human immune cells. I've worked - in various capacities - as a lab manager, molecular biologist, and on occasion even computational biologist on several projects. While we are a smaller lab, as lab manager I have a number of duties to keep our lab running. I take care of supply tracking and ordering, which includes some product research, new member training and onboarding, and general lab safety and maintenance. It's helped teach me the value of remaining on top of the small things and being preemptive when possible. However, I've spent the majority of my time as a molecular biologist. I've had to learn and apply a variety of techniques to attack problems. My work in studying cancer drug resistance gave me opportunities to work with mammalian cell culture of several different cell lines, performing Western blots, transfection, and even live cell viability assays by Incucyte. The cytokine signaling dynamics project helped expand my experience with multi-color flow cytometry and protein production. A variety of other projects have also introduced me to Luminex assays, lentivirus production, PCR, and RNA extraction. I've also been lucky enough to gain some experience with and appreciation for computational biology and the dry lab. A project attempting to use patient "-omics" data to predict disease outcome provided the chance to learn basic Python programming, the use of regression models, and some data normalization and analysis skills. While my work definitely leaned more towards the in-lab work, I've realized the importance of what's done with the data once it's been generated. Frankly, I can only hope my future provides me with as many opportunities to expand my knowledge and skillset as I've already had. I look forward to see what my career path has in store.

- Execute and design experiments, including troubleshooting, with minimal supervision. Analyze and present subsequent results to colleagues and senior researchers. Incorporated research and protocols into manuscripts.
- Investigate large data sets through a variety of methods using Python programming language. Gained familiarity with PCA, data manipulation and plotting, and logistic regression among other methods to understand and.
- Manage day-to-day requirements of laboratory operations. Order and keep inventory of supplies, maintain required consumables, schedule repairs, and onboard new members.
- Train and supervise incoming researchers possessing a range of experience levels. Work with them to develop proper technical skills, project understanding, and independence.
Student Assistant
- Operated front service desk, assisting 10 to 30 patrons per hour during shifts with locating and information on books and journals, often involving searching multiple databases. - Gathered and organized books from shelves for the Google books project. Several students worked on the project and proper communication as well as record keeping were a vital.
Student Researcher
- Co-designed over 10 modified proteins with enzyme cut sites using structural modeling, of which 5 proved to be functional, forming a multi-subunit protein cage structure.
- Successfully and repeatedly cloned all 10 designed plasmids into E. Coli, followed by confirmation of gene transformation and protein expression by gel electrophoresis.
- Purified 5 product copies consisting of 2 unique, designed proteins by poly-His affinity chromatography and filtration and confirmed purity by SDS-PAGE.
- Devised and perfected novel cleavage protocol over the course of 2 weeks to successfully “open” the designed protein cage with inserted cut sites.
Student Intern
- Examined statistical correlation between 2 desired products, over 5 conditions, and dozens of yeast strain types with data coming from several years.
- Discovered general trends involving product levels, oxygen and sugar input, and strain type that indicated which strains performed best, helping to narrow down running conditions from 16 to 8.
- Influenced management, through work including results above, to bring in a full-time team member to perform in-depth bioinformatics analysis of production running conditions.
