The individual tactics generally involved ensuring clinically appropriate utilization of laboratory services, protecting UHC members from poor quality laboratory services and egregious out-of-pocket expenses, effectively engaging with physicians, positively engaging with members, creating new plan/benefit structures, enhancing clinical and reimbursement policies, supporting UHC’s patient care model, and innovatively enabling technology at the point of care.Selected contributions:(*) Fully accountable for leading and delivering numerous innovative lab network strategies and programs from concept to execution across all lines of business and markets by directing (or collaborating with) cross-enterprise teams.(*) Led and owned utilization redirection into the contracted/preferred network, test compendium and cost transparency, member/physician engagement, improved payment integrity/fraud/waste/abuse initiatives, and point of care enablement.(*) Owned financial analysis around program valuation and savings drivers, cost/utilization trends, and various other activities such as cost-benefit analysis, capital investment requests, budget management, dashboards, and executive briefings.

Fully accountable for all aspects of the operations for a laboratory benefit management (LBM) program that managed $75M in annual cost, drove emerging lab network programs from concept to execution, led payment integrity/fraud/waste/abuse alignment initiatives, and otherwise drove lab testing utilization redirection. Also contributed to the development of a multi-year total cost of care reduction strategy, the implementation of a preferred lab network, annual business planning, enterprise health care affordability programs, organizational optimization, and various other emerging strategic initiatives.Selected contributions:(*) Implemented numerous operating discipline improvements in the LBM program including: full-risk capitation financial reconciliation, contractual compliance, capital acquisition, budgetary/financial forecasting, actuarial modeling, claims overpayment remediation/recovery, complaint resolution, and defect correction.(*) Used pilot program experience to create strategy and drive implementation of LBM program enhancements to reduce provider abrasion, increase program compliance, and better position the program for national expansion—without diluting program value or increasing operational costs. Enhancements included: cost/utilization trend mitigation, member out-of-pocket cost reduction, modernized user experience, provider engagement, and alignment with enterprise strategies. (*) Owned external relationships to include: professional societies, press inquiries, mitigation of legislative threats, broad-based provider communications, and an external scientific advisory board. (*) Drove UHC’s position in a formal dispute resolution process and worked closely with legal and regulatory teams to ensure health benefit parity, manage risk, and ensure compliance in all aspects of current and future program operations.
