“You have an incredible system. It’s one of the most well-thought out systems I’ve ever seen or even heard about. But… may I make an observation?” I was speaking to a journalist that got to see me in person and listen to my voice. She heard all the information about what I do in some detail… but she noticed something missing… my passion. That was her question: "Where's your passion?" I had dedicated over thirty years to the system, so clearly I am committed. I’ve invested heavily in making sure the principles are internally self-consistent and the deeper you go, the more interesting and more useful it gets… but she wondered how someone dedicates their entire life to an endeavor like this without passion for it. It’s because I don’t have passion for my system. I don’t have passion for any given piece of it, either. I’m not terribly passionate about The Ohana Way – not even the “ten levels deep” part. Nor 4P360, the 360-Degree Leadership System. What about my martial art? Surely one does not become a Grandmaster and devote nearly fifty years to a system without passion, right? Well, yes, I love my system… but I’m not passionate about it. I’m passionate about people. Want to see me light up? It’s people that do that. The system is a tool. The people are the purpose. I love to take my system to a leader and share it, and watch that leader show up in ways previously unimaginable. I love to teach the skills that enable a leader to walk into the storm with confidence and bring calm. I love seeing a leader face conflict and create collaboration. I love watching problems lead to peace. The system serves the leader – not the other way around. I’m not passionate about my system any more than I’d be passionate about a tool box full of great tools. I’m passionate about what we can do with them. I’m passionate about you – a leader – taking the system and growing in your mastery of this very cool thing. The goal, though, is always people. That’s where you find my passion. I show up with the tools to equip leaders to embody an integrity-driven, simple and sophisticated system to be more than they could imagine – and walk into chaos already knowing that they will win.
