ExitReality was an early metaverse, before the term was widely used. I define "metaverse" as a set of 3D multi-user environments that are cross-domain (single-domain 3D experiences are just "virtual worlds" and there is nothing particularly "meta" about those). It was a browser plugin that turned any website (in fact, any valid URL) into an interactive and immersive 3D virtual reality environment using VRML. I came in as In-house Counsel and did a drag net on the USPTO database in preparation for the drafting and filing of patents on the topic of hyperlinking within VR environments. The team was one of the most organised, motivated and fun that I've worked with, and after the patent task was completed my role transitioned to include 3D asset content database management, technical writing on developer documentation (which required me to learn how to program in VRML), quality assurance and a dabble in user interface design.The ExitReality concept was wildly ahead of its time. It created an entire 3D layer over the existing internet, through a simple browser plugin, in the days before WebXR.
