Burlington, Ma
Lead mechanical design engineer for production machinery to produce high volume portion control beverage products, both hot and cold.
Pepperell, Ma
Creative solutions to robotics, automation, medical device design, pharmaceutical test automation & process development, high volume production machinery, and other mechanical design and development challenges.
Waltham, Ma
Hull Crawler Robot: Technical lead developed on schedule and within budget a magnetic based crawler for maneuvering on the hull of a ship underway at 15 knots. • Led conception, design, development, and testing of the robot and its patent pending flexible magnetic traction system to avoid tipping the fairing into high currents while traversing 0.5”obstacles. • Study for harvesting energy from current using either an axial or Gorlov Helical Turbine mounted to an alternator inside the crawler for long mssion life. • Developed concepts for delivery and transfer of two crawlers from an unmanned surface craft to a ship underway at 15 knots in sea state 3.MAARS Robot: Led mechanical innovation and development of a weaponized track robot capable of climbing stairs.• Conceived and developed patented modular, hinged track assemblies to expose batteries for quick change-out; and low-cost elastomeric based suspension system.• Led the concepts, design, and development of charging handle actuator for turret mounted M240B machine gun. Pharmaceutical Automation: Led mechanical development for on time delivery of a robotic work cell to automate the processes of volumetric and coulometric Karl Fischer titrations to precisely measure very low moisture content in pharmaceutical powders. • Vol. titration: dispense reagents, pour in powder quickly, stir, titrate with a commercial unit, open titration vessel and invert, clean & dry vessel, and reassemble titration cell for next cycle. Reduced hardware to 2 belt driven slides, 1 vessel pivot, and 4 cams.• Automated all vial, funnel, and powder pour fixture handling between magazines, weigh station, and titration stations using a track mounted 5 axis robot.Dragon Runner Robot: Designed, developed, and led transition to production a low-cost, simplified upper arm with 360º wrist, adjustable camera mount, new gripper and patented universal jaw/finger sets; simpler, more rugged pan/tilt camera.
Bedford, Ma
Automated bank note handling equipment (10-40/sec) for Federal Reserve and commercial banks. • In 5 months unified disperate small groups into a strong, cohesive, rapid-response development team. Technically led and managed engineers, designers, technicians, and machinists in designing, fabricating, and developing Alpha & Beta prototype bank note banding machinery. • Senior Principal Engineer: met project goals by developing production prototypes of novel, passive, band loop forming technique combined with compact band tension, heat-weld, and cut tooling. Developed concepts for preconditioning batches of notes for ultra high speed singulating at 50/sec.
Wilmington, Ma
Laser Systems Division. DRAM memory repair, thin and thick film circuit trim and test. • Concept generation, design, development, and installation of the H600 substrate handler, a new product line. It picks and transfers variety of ceramic plates from a bank of magazines to a laser trimmer and back. • Conceived/commercialized three-rod, flexure suspension for IC probing system - repeatability <1μ.• Quickly developed low cost wafer transfer robot concept and demonstration model & covered many small projects.
Billerica, Ma
Specialized in high-risk, custom machine, process, and product development projects and consulting. • Gained reputation for creativity and ingenious concept work with ability to communicate new ideas well to clients. • Developed first machine to automate production of egg rolls. Rate is 100 pieces per minute with 90% efficiency per program goals. Used duplex-nested, twelve station, dial indexing machine. Contributed significant overtime to make possible such major innovations as singulation of dough sheets from “cookie cutter” stacks and “flexdie” folding and forming technology. • Enabled introduction of pop-corn cakes: invented novel process and equipment to increase speed of die separation to improve corn expansion successfully creating fuller, lighter cakes with control of shape and texture.• Conceived and developed demonstration tooling for orienting, positioning, and tinting dry, delicate, contact lenses (pre-hydration) to within .005” concentricity.
Wilmington, De
Led Modernization of bullet manufacturing line: Cut labor by 50% and increased bullet quality, process control, and machine efficiency. Jacketed rifle bullets: consolidated four previously separate process steps into one modernized punch press operation. Doubled bullet accuracy by reducing weight variation (forming lead core and copper jacket in a precise volume with a novel outlet for excess lead), and by forming, grooving, and resizing all in a single pass through a precision die set. Conceived and initiated higher force bullet forming to reduce internal voids, also contributing to accuracy.Terminal Stitchers: Lead engineer for $1.5 million program that successfully developed, on time and 20% over budget, a line of cam driven terminal insertion machines for automated production of “ZIF” connectors. Rate was 500 terminals per minute transferred from a bandolier carrier strip and inserted into circulating injection mold “boats”. Used duplexed, flexure-mounted tooling and novel terminal inspection/rejection technique to achieve this unusually high production rate.
