I am an experienced Mining Engineer having held senior managerial positions within Australian and Internationally. During my 25+ years in the mining industry I have had exposure to the following areas:• open pit and underground mining methods,• owner and contractor mining,• mine technical services (survey, mine geology and grade control, contractor management, geotechnical and hydrology, drill and blast, dewatering, LOMP and mine reporting and administration).Additionally (as General Manager) I have also been responsible for:• site safety leadership,• chairing of daily inter-departmental communication meetings,• Corporate and head office communication • comprehensive reporting activities in line with budgets and long-term plans.Establishing a strong safety culture is essential for operational success which can be achieved by the following;• demonstration of principles of care of all workers• activities designed to identify and manage workplace hazards and conditions• activities designed to improve workplace behaviours • thorough incident/accident investigation and reporting• empowering workers to voice their concerns regarding safety issues.As mines are often located in areas of climatic extremes, I have worked in below freezing conditions in northern China, hot and dry deserts of Western Australia, torrential rain and typhoons in the Philippines and hot geothermal vent systems in Indonesia. Language and cultural diversity offers an opportunity to build effective operational teams with skill development and knowledge transfer. Encouraging and mentoring local workforces has been both challenging and rewarding.
