I am responsible for the complete engineering deliverables, safety assessment, requirements, architecture, performance, performance prediction and led a team of engineers to complete the mechanical, electrical and software tasks. I have completed a number of projects, firstly to produce two 100kW fuel cell test stations, then three 60kW fuel cells systems; one of these 60kW fuel cell systems was integrated into a vehicle. Both of these projects were completed in less than 12 months, and required extensive visits to customer sites, liaising with their engineering staff. I am presently working on the follow on project integrating a more powerful fuel cell system into a vehicle. I am lead engineer, had final authority on design decisions, interface with the customer on technical issues, and ensured all the parts designed came together to create a working product that met the requirements. Total engineering oversight.I was also required to investigate faults and ensure testing was completed and documented. Due to my experience over the previous decade across the electrical, software, control, fluid dynamics & thermodynamics and fuel cells areas I was able to perform a significant proportion of the detailed design and issue resolution personally as well as reviewing the design documentation for all engineering staff across all disciplines.

The fuel cells and fuel cell systems operated in the company was growing and I was pulled in to help develop an asset management system that could analyse all the data being returned from testing and systems in the field and provide a range of information for a variety of internal customers ranging from top level metrics (number of fuel cells running, hours under load etc.) to detailed engineering information, like degradation tracking and fault prediction. This was developed in a number of tools, Matlab, C#, MS SQL Server, Excel and some purchased web interfaces.The second role was to provide fuel cell simulation support, where I took thermodynamic fuel cell models previously developed by myself and other members of staff, documented the formulas used, compared results, investigated and understood the differences, and then extended this to compare to external tools and experimental data.Several times during this period I was pulled from the role to assist on other higher priority projects. In one two month period I developed a PIC micro controller to interface our fuel cell ECU with an inverter operating a bespoke RS485 protocol, so that the fuel cell could control the inverter. I developed both hardware and software and preformed the testing.

Within the growing company, I took on the Leadership of a team of software engineers, and over a 3 year period grew the team from 2 to 10 engineers, while still responsible for my own software and controls deliverables. I was responsible for organising the engineers, ensuring all projects were correctly resourced and planned, that high quality software was created, and built up a base of core libraries upon which to develop and build.The tool chain I developed enabled automated operation of the system test station, remote viewing of the user interface and extending the previously built libraries to process and report system data. 2005 – 2008: Intelligent Energy developed a Fuel Cell engine for the H2Origin van with PSA. I was responsible for the control system, the Human Machine Interface (HMI), and the telemetry.2006 – 2010: Intelligent Energy developed a Fuel Cell engine for the ENFICA aircraft. I was responsible for the control system, including commissioning, calibrating, and supporting integration with the aircraft.I was sole architect and developer of a database (MySQL) with a web interface (ASP) to contain the businesses component information and assembly hierarchy. The normalised database structure and web interface has required very little maintenance (11 updates) and management (12 manual edits) and included features like automatic backups, user registration and access control, as well as the ability to tag components with notes. This database and web interface is listed as Business Critical Software within Intelligent Energy.

I was asked to assist the development of fuel cell systems and in particular the control. I took over developing the first Fuel Cell controller written in Matlab/Simulink, re-architecting it use some of the low level algorithms and re-writing/creating others.The ECU communication was performed over CAN and RS232 and I developed several programs in Delphi to diagnose communications issues or enable a level of human interaction with the ECU and Fuel Cell.The cell voltage monitoring (CVM) system was upgraded to use CAN rather than RS485, to 192 cells from 32 and read and reported all information at 33Hz rather than 2Hz. I was responsible for the communications and wrote the embedded software in C. This software has required 3 updates in the last 8 years (2 additional features, and 1 bug fix).

I was recruited into a team developing PEM fuel cells. The main focus was to increase the specific power output of the fuel cell technology, but also improve durability, aid the understanding of the fundamental physical phenomena and capture IP.I built and tested fuel cells and reported on the results, providing information and understanding to the design team and have a number of joint patent claims with other members of the design team.I was involved in adding functionality to the test stations software (written in Delphi for the PC and Ladder Logic for the real time controller) and eventually became sole developer. I personally designed the test stations, including all component selection/sourcing and procurement, and physically built many of them, diagnosing and correcting instrumentation faults.The software I developed was able to run unattended, with a simple scripting language I created to provide test cycles. This enabled the three fuel cells to run continuously for 1000 hours on a variety of test cycles to complete testing on schedule. The test stations are still in operation and have only very infrequently required any software maintenance.The test station software I wrote also uploaded log files to a central server, with features to work around communications faults. The data was processed by an application I wrote in Excel (VBA) which would perform individual test analysis, monitor changes against operating time, print to PDF and provide top level metrics.I adapted one of the test stations to operate a Fuel Cell below freezing and used this to develop the cold start strategy for the system. The highlight of this work was understanding the phenomena that affected the cold start and developing strategies to mitigate the negative influences. These strategies when then coded and tested to prove the hypothesis.

I was responsible for researching, developing and implementing computational design tools for use within a fuel cell design group. Using current CFD techniques to model the physics within a Fuel Cell. Also aiding the sponsoring companies with their design problems, attending meetings, and producing and delivering reports of progress and results.I Implemented the algorithms required to model the physical phenomena occurring within a Fuel Cell. I extended the fluid dynamics solver to include terms for multiple homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions, species concentrations, electrode potentials, current distribution and heat transfer.I converted the Finite Volume solver to perform on parallel machines using algorithms which would be suitable for clustered machines.I was sole system administration on 25+ UNIX machines. Everything from installing OS, patches, compilers, to administering users using NIS+, troubleshooting/help desk for those users, and liaising with the vendors of those systems to ensure continued operations. The machines ranged from Dec Alpha, Silicon Graphics, Sun Sparc workstations, and Linux PCs. I ensured that software written by any number of the researches did not conflict with source code already written, source management and archiving.
