The Energy and Utilities sector is being significantly disrupted by digital transformation. We recognised the breadth of work Datacom has in the sector, and I was able to work with our Account Executives to represent this to the market across our entire customer base. By doing this we were able to add some new customers and grow our revenue by 20%.

I took on the challenge of establishing our software solutions practices in Melbourne and Sydney from scratch. My role was essentially running a start up to find staff, select technology/offerings, engage and nurture clients, sell work and establish software culture and processes. It was an incredibly demanding and invigorating 3+ years, and I grew the team to be 50 people in Melbourne and 30 people in Sydney.

My focus was on managing key client relationships, business development and acquiring new business.

I took the helm of our IT Management business during a period of significant change, and a sustained major relocation project. We standardised on ITIL, started up our local private cloud IaaS services, and won some new outsource business. But our major focus during these years was the design, build, commissioning and successful relocation to our new state of the art datacentre in Auckland. That was an amazing total team effort.

The software team had grown to the point that I needed to focus purely on customers and selling in a Client Manager role. It was a dynamic period as we battled against Java until .Net was launched in 2002 and we eventually all migrated to C#. I developed good connections with Microsoft and did a two year stint representing New Zealand as a Microsoft Regional Director.

In 1994 I started the Microsoft development team in Datacom, using Visual Basic and Windows 3.1. This involved selling the work, nurturing and managing clients, and establishing the people and practices to deliver successful projects.

In those days we were an Oracle forms shop with little exposure to the early personal computers.

I was seconded to our very first IT outsource as part of team of 4 people. I became responsible for a Unix mini computer running the first implementation of Oracle Financials in NZ. So I became an Oracle DBA, Unix System Administrator and Novel CNE. We installed Windows and Apple PCs and I undertook some corporate systems development in the earliest versions of windows and VBA. It was five very dynamic years during the hey day of the Fletcher Challenge empire.

I started at Datacom as a graduate software developer working in Vax Basic and Cobol on mini computers with magnetic tape drives.
