Research supported by the Directorate for Geosciences spans all disciplines within the geosciences broadly and is carried out worldwide. Research in the polar regions also includes social sciences (in the Arctic), biological sciences, and astronomy/astrophysics (in Antarctica). Critical research infrastructure is also a major component of the Directorate and includes activities such as: support for the US Academic Research Fleet; support for the National Center for Atmospheric Research; support of facilities that enable research in seismology and geodesy; and management and oversight of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP) in support of NSF’s role as lead agency for the U.S. presence in Antarctica.
