Welsh Brew Tea is an iconic Welsh brand who sell their products in most supermarkets in Wales. They wanted their website to be an advert for their products & brand identity, to gain new retail partners. I worked with them on a part-time basis (alongside my freelance work) for six months to re-build their websites.They had previously outsourced the web design to an overseas company, but decided to bring it in-house to give them more control. I re-built their websites using WordPress, so they can now log-in & easily update information.

We would generally be given a theme or event to create ideas for - the best of which would be put straight onto the website. I was responsible for creating our photographic cards & calendar designs, which always required a large amount of Photoshop work - often heavily manipulating images to allow for personalisation. Direct Smile software was used to implement personalisation by placing a text box onto the background design, using all kinds of masks & effects to make the typography a realistic part of the image.Each product line (for example, an A5 greeting card or an A4 calendar) had a specific InDesign template which was synchronised with DirectSmile - so, when an order was placed on the website, a PDF was created automatically using XML files. Each PDF was then dropped into the appropriate hot-folder which imposed the PDF for digital printing.It was also my job to implement the pre-press / production process by setting all imposition rules & creating new product templates. I also gained certificates to operate HP Indigo digital printers - so I could take over print production in an emergency.As I had some web design experience, I started taking on more & more responsibilities - like creating HTML newsletters for email marketing and producing HTML content for the website landing pages. Set up various printers; flatbed, screen & rotary printing.This job gave me a good understanding of the printing process - regarding screen / flatbed / rotary printing - and how to optimise graphics for these processes.

This was my first real job & still one of my favourite work experiences. I started as a Pre-Press Technician, compiling various newspapers for the press. Newspaper pages were created as PDF files, which were printed onto CMYK film negatives, which were then burned onto metal plates for litho printing. With up to seven newspapers printing in one day, it was also my job to advise the press on the most probable schedule, updating the schedule throughout the day, monitoring page-flow & chasing the… Show more This was my first real job & still one of my favourite work experiences. Some external newspapers were constructed using QuarkXpress, or supplied as PDF files which we simply printed onto negatives. Our in-house publications were produced using specialist publishing software - Mediaplanner & Tera Desktop Publishing software. Each publication was rather like a jigsaw puzzle. If there was any space un-filled, we would fill the gaps with generic adverts of all sizes.After 3 years I was moved to the Planning Department where I produced plans for each publication. The size of each newspaper was determined by the amount of advertising space used, then the adverts were placed strategically throughout the newspaper, taking into account the advertisers requests, press colour capabilities & the Editorial space needed.This job demanded a broad knowledge of desktop publishing software, basic computer networking, graphics software & general printing software - because If a problem ever arose (which was often late at night) it was up to me to isolate & fix the problem & ensure each publication met the deadline.
