“Do, or do not. There is no try.” You may or may not be familiar with that quote from Yoda, but in my opinion, that’s a really good way of approaching things. To me it means that if you choose to do something, you do it all in. My dad always said a similar thing, although maybe not quite as eloquently as Yoda. His words were “do it like you mean it, or don’t do it at all.” This is how I live my life, and how I approach my job. When it comes to customer service, either give it 100% or find a different job. When it comes to running a store, give it 100% or choose a different profession. If you choose to volunteer for a project, then be prepared to do that project to the absolute best of your ability. I believe that we should never stop learning how to be better at the things we choose to do. The minute we stop trying to improve, we will get run over by someone who is. On top of that, take pride in it. I’m proud to have been a part of stores and territories who have ranked at the top of their respective companies. Be proud of what you’ve accomplished, it probably took a lot of work to get there. I think this mentality has served me well over a 20+ year career in management, and I hope that I’ve passed that on to some of the people I have worked with over the years.
