The NVSWCD promotes sustainable urban and suburban activities and stewardship to conserve our soil, water, air, plants, and animal resources in Fairfax County - vital components of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. We achieve this through effective leadership, technical assistance and outreach programs in partnership with government, industry, non-profit organizations, and the public.

The Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District is one of 47 such Districts across the Commonwealth of Virginia and three thousand Districts across the nation. Districts work cooperatively with landowners and local governments to effectively protect the nation's water quality for our people and our fish and wildlife resources

The Virginia State Water Control Board works with the Department of Environmental Quality to promulgate water quality regulations for the Commonwealth.

The Committee presents recommendations to the Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Agriculture regarding the listing or delisting of plants as noxious weeds. The committee considers the degree to which the plant is detrimental to crops; surface waters; desirable plants; livestock; land or other property; public health; the environment; and the economy.

After an 11 year absence, I am delighted to have joined my many friends, new and old, at the US Department of the Interior. After being on the Transition Team in December, and the Beachhead Team starting on January 20, I have now been appointed Interior's Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy, Management, and Budget. Looking forward to making Interior a better place to work for our employees, a better partner to state and local governments, and a more effective deliverer of services to the public.

The District promotes voluntary conservation practices in Fairfax County to improve water quality and other environmental values. I was the top vote-getting Republican candidate state-wide in this election year, and enjoyed both the endorsement of the Sierra Club and the support of the Tea Party. Just goes to prove that good ideas on environmental policy can generate support across ideological and party lines, which is what I like to do.
