My experience at Barworks has been incredibly varied and fulfilling. I have been part of a team that has created a variety of great businesses in the hospitality space. Some were an amazing success (eg Camden Town Brewery) and some shone brightly but ultimately failed (eg The Good Life Diner group). My current role includes all the usual things you expect from an FD... cashflow planning, strategy, budgeting, annual audit/accounts/tax, overhead reduction etc. I also cover IT planning, telecoms, insurance, utilities and systems. I'm point of contact for our bankers and solicitors. Over the years we have brought and sold companies, created EMI schemes, issued shares under EIS and SEIS and held numerous (unsuccessful!) discussions with PE and other potential investors. I was part of 2 successful crowd-funding campaigns (Camden Town Brewery and East London Liquor Company). I enjoy the strategic aspect of the job, but also fighting for the last £1 when necessary. I would say that my biggest achievement at Barworks was guiding the company through the pandemic and then taking a lead role in the sale of 2/3s of the business at a decent multiple of pre-COVID EBITDA. The deal allowed Barworks to clear all bank debt, COVID debts and shareholder loans, and left us with a nice war-chest to rebuild again.
