One year of ACGME accredited post-graduate medical residency. The operative portion consists of general, plastic-reconstructive, and oral-maxillofacial surgical cases under the direction of faculty. Experience with preoperative evaluation and surgical treatment of cleft-lip and cleft-palate patients occurs with the Craniofacial Team at the Connecticut Children's Medical Center. Rotations: Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery (28 weeks), Surgical Intensive Care (8 weeks), Trauma Surgery (4 weeks), General Surgery (4 weeks), Pediatric Surgery (4 weeks), Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (4 weeks)

Clinical responsibilities included pre-operative evaluation and physical examination of both emergency and elective surgical patients, intra-operative management, and post-operative evaluation with treatment of common medical and surgical complications. The didactic component emphasized basic medical sciences and the medical management of the surgical patient, while the operative portion consisted of approximately 150 general surgical cases under the direction of faculty. Rotations: General Surgery (16 weeks), Trauma Surgery (12 weeks), Surgical Intensive Care (8 weeks), Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery (8 weeks), Pediatric Surgery (4 weeks), Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (4 weeks)

This honors elective for instruction in Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery was selected competitively on the basis of clinical ability, scholastic performance, and a personal interview. The experience included approximately 9 hours of supervised patient care and 3 hours of didactic instruction per week, with cases exceeding the difficulty level appropriate for the standard senior curriculum. Duties involved treatment of medically complex patients, advanced surgical extraction techniques of erupted and impacted teeth, oral soft-tissue surgery, osseous surgery, biopsies of lesions, dental implant surgery, and oral sedation techniques.

Four week elective rotation as a senior dental student within the hospital Department of Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery at an average of 80 hours per week. The experience included attending all didactic sessions, assisting in major surgical cases including exposure to head/neck cancer, supervised advanced oral surgery, participation in all hospital patient rounds, and 24-hour facial trauma call with suturing of facial lacerations.

Four week elective rotation as a senior dental student within the Department of Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery at an average of 80 hours per week. The experience included attending all didactic sessions, assisting in major surgical cases, supervised advanced oral surgery, participation in all hospital patient rounds, and 24-hour facial trauma call with management of dental trauma and suturing of facial lacerations.

Four week elective externship as a junior dental student within a multi-doctor private practice. Rotation averaged 40 hours per week observing out-patient surgery cases and techniques in ambulatory general anesthesia.

Semester-long independent project of approximately 20 hours weekly. The parent project's main objective was mutation of a plasmid vector for use in further experiments into the mechanism for ribosomal frame-shifting in bacterial DNA polymerase. Techniques and activities included: plating and culturing bacteria, antibiotic-resistance selection of bacterial colonies, isolating bacterial DNA, selective mutation of bacterial genes, pouring and loading agarose gel electrophoresis, and interpretation of gel results.

Competitively selected via interview process and personal essays, this leadership role involved 18-20 hours per week devoted to general operation of the college community. Responsibilities: enforced University policies and regulations with nighttime duty and on-call availability for emergencies, planned and implemented activities for community development, counseled students on personal and academic issues, mediated conflicts, and acted as liaison between administration and students.
