I was a Solicitor in the firm’s busy Litigation department, handling a wide variety of civil dispute resolution matters on behalf of private individuals and a range of business entities at all levels of civil procedure. I undertook work on behalf of both Pursuers and Defenders ranging from commercial, contractual, property and reparation disputes to contentious private client work, debt recovery and insolvency cases. A substantive part of my work involved regularly appearing in Sheriff Courts throughout the country, the Sheriff Appeal Court and the All Scotland Sheriff Personal Injury Court, whether as principal agent or as instructed by other Solicitors around the country on behalf of both Pursuers and Defenders. I was also a registered Notary Public and a member of State School Lawyers, a social mobility initiative which highlights the enormous contribution to the legal profession of individuals educated in the state sector.

I began my training in the firm’s highly-regarded Litigation department, assisting primarily with personal injury and medical negligence cases, both in the Sheriff Court and the Court of Session. These claims ranged from road traffic injuries and accident at work claims to complex clinical negligence actions. During my time in the Commercial team, my day-to-day work involved working on a wide variety of commercial property and corporate transactions, as well as advising on aspects of charity law.For the final year of my traineeship, I returned to the Litigation department in a general and highly varied litigation role into which I subsequently qualified.

As a summer intern, my remit was predominantly to enhance undergraduate and postgraduate student outreach for the Mason Institute for Medicine, Life Sciences and the Law - an interdisciplinary research hub based within the School of Law at the University of Edinburgh. This included designing, developing and driving a sustainable framework for future student-led events and symposia for the benefit of other peer students under the auspices of this academic institution.My responsibilities included working under the stewardship of Professor Graeme Laurie, Professor of Medical Jurisprudence at the University of Edinburgh, in helping with background research into proportionate models of research governance and interoperable uses of data in order to prepare a brief for a Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator Award application. Additionally, I took direct responsibility for updating the Institute's marketing, enhancing web and social media design, including the output of the Institute's Twitter feed and taking responsibility for setting up a 'Student Zone' on the website (and served as inaugural editor), enabling students with a forum for publishing blogs or commentaries on contemporary issues in medicine, law and the life sciences.Additionally I worked collaboratively with colleagues in the Mason Institute and the wider University to organise a number of events to encourage outreach within the wider University and potentially beyond, including a public debate on assisted dying in Scotland and a complimentary arts symposium which considers how the arts can provoke and stimulate debate in bioethics and the life sciences. The organisation of these events included a great deal of marketing and public relations experience.This internship was facilitated by Employ.ed on Campus at the University of Edinburgh, and I chose to specifically develop core competencies in: Networking, Working Collaboratively and Harnessing Opportunities.

Between 2008 and 2013, I gained a range of experience in criminal practice and procedure by shadowing the work of solicitors and solicitor-advocates at Edinburgh's leading criminal firm (according to The Legal 500), Capital Defence Lawyers. Activities I was involved in included attending bail petitions and trials (both summary and solemn) at the Edinburgh Sheriff Court, High Court bail appeals, High Court appeals by stated case, processing case files and court documents, and attending visits with clients (both locally and in prison).

I shadowed Sheriff Frank Crowe of Edinburgh Sheriff Court on a number of occasions throughout the summer of 2012. This was highly beneficial experience of both civil and criminal court process and procedure.

In my final school year, I, along with roughly 30 students from across Scotland, was selected to partake in the pilot year of the Scottish Languages Baccalaureate, a new qualification for Scotland equivalent to an Advanced Higher and designed to bridge the gap between the working methodologies of secondary school and higher education, drawing upon the interdisciplinary skills learned in English and Modern Languages.I chose to explore the importance of modern languages in the context of the business world.My work formed the basis for a case study for subsequent students.
