I have had the opportunity to practice leadership in a lot of different contexts, and I am still fascinated by a key question: what’s the most important thing a leader does, and what’s the most impactful way they do it?[If this were our game show (more on that below), this where we would cue the “contestants are thinking” music…]Of course, it’s an impossible question. The last time I searched leadership books on Amazon, I got over 60,000 hits. There are a ton of ideas out there from a lot of people smarter than me about how you can be a better leader. But if I have to answer, I’d say the most important thing is to leave it better than you found it. And the best way to do that is to empower others in order to create the conditions for success. Reach out to me and I’ll explain that answer - and I’d love to hear yours. My answer has really shaped my career and certainly describes what I do now. After a long career in the financial industry with a detour in Hollywood, I’m so excited to be the Head of People and Culture for The Realest, where I work with an exceptional group of professionals to blaze the trail in the music memorabilia space while also building an exceptional place to work and express ourselves. I am also trying to use my powers for good: I work with college students and non-profits and entrepreneurs to try to help them rise to their leadership challenges and drive positive change. I love working with people and focusing on values and culture. I spend a lot of time on strategy and communication, on operations and marketing, but I’m also focusing more and more on innovation and collaboration. That’s where the game show comes in. I created Imagine That!, a teamwork-enhancing, creativity-supercharging activity structured as a classic TV game show. Because - and we’ve got the power of play research to back us up - fun interaction is an amazing gateway to serious progress. It’s been an eclectic journey so far. Where do we go next?
