As a Sr. SDET, I lead the testing team for our new product lineup. Crystal Structure Prediction (CSP) is the leading method for discovering new materials and for predicting the behavior of materials at different conditions. The first step of CSP is to make a random guess at the material's crystal structure. In nature, materials tend to prefer symmetric shapes with some small deviations, so it makes sense to use a symmetrical structure as our initial guess. To this end, I developed the Python package PyXtal (https://github.com/qzhu2017/PyXtal). PyXtal is free and open source, meaning anyone can use it and modify it as needed. The package also handles molecular crystals, and introduces a new feature which lets molecules be placed in special Wyckoff positions.Through testing, we showed that our method of pre-symmetrization makes it easier to find the ground state. Overall, this lowers time and computing costs for materials researchers.
