I've been in Marine engineering since the 1970s.From 1975 until 1982, I was involved with the design and manufacture of Steel and Aluminium Watertight, Weathertight, and Gastight doors, hatches and Scuttles.From December 1982, I worked as a ships draughtstman in Yarrow shipbuilders.I graduated in 1990 with an OU degree in engineeering subjects at BSC level, and moved into the Design Office, where I was primarily involved with weight control, then seating design for the Type23 project.I moved quite rapidly into the Malaysian Frigate Project, Eventually being in control of the global ship FEA, involving global bending, and being in control of a small team of engineers which examined the local effects of global bending on the ships structure at a more detailed level.After a period in the Forward Design Group, I spent some months in Production Design, dealing with Design Agency Service Tasks - essentially how the Customer would like to improve the design of the Type23.Folowing this, and some experience regarding commisioning of the Malaysian Project SCG seating, I moved on to the Brunei Project, under Robert Harley. I was involved with Global Hull Bending again, and after that, the design of medium weight equipment seating, where I was in change of a team of about 8.In 2000, I moved to the Type45 project, and took charge of the Global Bending task.Following that, I was one of three Principal engineers who were responsible for the integration of the design into the 3D model.When the Engineering Manager for Type 45 moved south, I was given the opportunity of filling in for him.In about 2005/2006, I was moved into the Carrier project. The project was split up over the UK, and my involvement was Global and Local Strength again.In 2011, I moved to the Type 26 program, with focus initially on global strength again, with a small team. In 2014, I was put in charge of Scantlings, again, with a small team.
