Prior to starting my career I spent my formative years on the family farm in beautiful Nova Scotia where the Johnstone’s have sustainably farmed the same land for over 200 years. It is here where I first learned the value of resource prioritization and the importance of finding efficient solutions to complex problems in a timely manner. Farmers are inventors, mechanics, carpenters, entrepreneurs and most importantly, problem solvers. To that point, my great-grandfather was well known in the community for inventing numerous pieces of machinery to assist in the various farm operations and improve production efficiency, and this problem solving ingenuity is built into the Johnstone DNA. After leaving the farm I started my professional career at Westinghouse-Central Engineering where I worked alongside mentoring PhD`s and Engineers in designing and building custom power solutions for R&D companies. This is where I realized that one of my core assets is my ability to analyze situations and quickly and effectively implement solutions. Following the closing of Westinghouse I worked for Siemens Canada in providing engineering solutions, from heavy industrial applications to high tech infrastructure and buildings. I gained the required experience by listening and understanding client’s needs, researching options and then implementing feasible solutions.In my current role as Senior Associate Vise-President Infrastructure and Operations, I lead a talented team of over 200 staff looking after over $1.2 billion dollars in assets covering 450 acres and multiple sites. This includes all aspects of capital planning, utilities and energy management, facility operations, operational budget development, asset management, space utilization and planning, project management and emergency response (Director of EOC) and Campus Safety and Security.
