While studying for my undergraduate degree, I thought I would register with the state as a tax preparer and get some experience in tax preparation. Since 2012, I've been preparing individual tax returns, with the occasional partnership return thrown in. I've concentrated mostly on individuals that had run into difficulties with getting preparers to understand patronage dividends from worker cooperatives (such as Rainbow, where I work). So, many of my clients are my co-workers from Rainbow. However, over the years, I've gathered clients from other worker cooperatives, as well as small business owners.

The Coordinating Bookkeeper is essentially Rainbow's General Ledger Accountant. I oversaw the creation, reconciliation, and recording of journals into the general ledger. I maintained the store's fixed asset inventory. I was also responsible for creating interim financial statements, making presentations to the Board of Directors and Membership, producing 1099s and city and county tax returns, as well as assisting our independent accountant with closing the year and determining the patronage dividends each year. During my time as Coordinating Bookkeeper, I was able to implement some automation to reduce data entry - saving time and reducing the chance for errors. I also revised the accounting procedure manual for the store and assisted with several IT projects, including the creation of a Human Resources database. I gave up the position and am on a leave of absence in order to pursue my CPA license.
