I act as a technical resource for outside salesmen and construction project managers. I visit existing project sites with them where needs and deficiencies have been identified in the Owner's boiler, chiller, cooling tower or steam system and then figure out a solution to bring the system up to optimal performance. The solutions often include repiping the equipment into a primary/secondary arrangement, or adding a buffer tank, or evaluating the system flow rates. I use AutoCAD to produce system schematics and flow diagrams to aid the construction team with installation. I review and approve equipment submittals prior to purchase to ensure the project gets the correct components.I assist the Director of Engineering in monthly training classes that are held for consulting engineers, installing contractors and facility operators.

Using FastEst software package, I preformed take-offs for plumbing and mechanical piping projects that we were bidding. I used Microsoft Office software to tabulate the take-off data and format it into a commercial bid.I utilized AutoCAD 2021 to re-design and coordinate the plumbing, piping, and HVAC duct systems on contracted projects. As a project manager, I requested equipment and material quotes from wholesalers and issued purchase orders to procure those project components. I generated RFIs and change orders for projects under contract. I requested quotes from potential subcontractors and wrote subcontractor agreements. I prepared equipment and material submittals and closeout documentation.

I served as the Lead Engineer for a 4-member team of engineers and designers and was Engineer-of-Record for over 50 design projects. Typical project work was from the following areas: lodging, multifamily residential, military, retail, hospital, and commercial offices. My team was full of lifelong learners (with 3 Engineers-in-Training) and I found tremendous satisfaction in mentoring them and watching them grow.

I was involved with school and multifamily residential projects with an emphasis on high-performance energy efficient designs. For the 2 school projects I became intimately familiar with, the mechanical systems were ground-source heat pumps and VAV with reheat. Each HVAC system was about 33% better than code, and the plumbing systems were 45% better than code. I mentored younger engineers and designers, participated in construction administration activities and earned my LEED Green Associate credential.

I was responsible for typical duties with respect to mechanical projects – I documented existing equipment conditions, prepared HVAC load calculations using the Trane TRACE 700 program, made equipment selections, prepared construction cost estimates, wrote specifications and redlined duct and piping layouts for CAD technicians. The projects were nearly all renovations of existing buildings. Because of many ongoing contracts, I obtained security clearance for unescorted access to the cadet area of the US Air Force Academy.

I was responsible for several major components of a typical energy service performance contract project, including the following: conducting energy audits, calculating building energy use, identifying energy savings measures, developing guaranteed energy savings, constructing energy use simulations and documenting utility company incentives. Through my efforts, a proposal was developed that would, if implemented, save the City of Boise about 30% on energy costs. I also assisted construction personnel in various tasks such as developing scopes of work for energy savings measures, reviewing construction documents for specification compliance, reviewing shop drawings and submittals to maintain energy savings, and monitoring and documenting actual energy savings.

Administratively, I actively participated in all interviewing, hiring and reviews of staff members. I was the point of contact between staff and management for CAD department requests. I led the team to modernize and streamline outdated procedures for CAD and engineering to boost morale and improve productivity. I wrote specifications, fee proposals and mentored other staff members. On the engineering side, I was the project manager and Engineer of Record for project types in the retail, educational, hospital, commercial and governmental categories. I led a team of 6 CAD technicians and 4 designers to accomplish my deadlines. While not a LEED professional, I acquired design experience on LEED projects and modeled buildings using the eQuest software package.

I provided management and technical design leadership for a 12-person department. I was Engineer of Record for all work produced by the team and responsible for project designs in all areas of HVAC and plumbing for residential projects. I was involved with writing fee proposals, negotiating contracts and mentoring the younger staff members. With staff consensus, implemented and enforced engineering design and CAD standards for efficient and consistent project deliverables.

Technical Lead Engineer of a 6-person department, and Engineer of Record for all Boise-based Mechanical Engineering work. Responsible for project designs in all areas of HVAC and plumbing with project types ranging from commercial and retail to institutional. Prepared HVAC and plumbing load calculations, design lay-outs, specifications and electronic contract drawings in MicroStation format. Reviewed submittals and shop drawings and conducted site visits. Helped cultivate future long-term client relationships and new business development.

Coordinated all aspects of commercial projects from design concept to building start-up. Responsible for HVAC and plumbing designs for a variety of building types including schools, retail shops and office buildings. Actively involved with load calculations, electronic contract drawing preparation in AutoCAD format, shop drawings/submittal review and site observations for all projects. Prepared design lay-outs and directed workload assignments for 2 CAD technicians.

Assisted senior-level staff with HVAC and plumbing design tasks for school projects. Helped prepare load calculations, pre-bid cost estimates, electronic drawings in AutoCAD format, specifications and other contract documents. Provided support in submittal review and conducted supervised site visits.
